Lego and Star Wars Decades go hand in hand. But I don’t think anyone could have predicted anything like the recent LEGO Star Wars: Rebuilding the Galaxy Special edition mini album. Premiering on Disney+ last week, the entire Star Wars When a powerful artifact is unearthed from a hidden Jedi Temple, the galaxy is thrown into complete chaos. This results in a new, wonderfully wild and twisted version of the galaxy, where the good guys are bad and the bad are good.
beat Opportunity to speak with showrunners and executive producers Dan Hernandez and Benji Summit. In our discussion, the pair explain how to do it Rebuilding the Milky Way The special is different from other multiverse stories and gives Jar Jar Binks the treatment he deserves.
Taimur Dar: When the first trailer for this was released Rebuilding the Milky Way Darth Jar Jar took the internet by storm as soon as the miniseries was released. It’s safe to say that Jar Jar Binks is the “Bruno” of Star Wars. We don’t talk about him. I want to ask if Darth Jar Jar is something you have to fight for, or does it have to be fought for for everyone on the ship from the beginning?
Benji Summit: We think this is going to be something we have to fight for. The first idea we quickly realized was that in a reconstructed galaxy, this might be the perfect opportunity to make Darth Jar Jar. We’ve had the pleasure of discussing this issue with other fans over the years. Now we finally have a chance. We wonder if we have to fight for it, or if Ahmed [Best] Will even do this. Luckily, when we first showed it to Lucasfilm, they laughed and totally embraced it. When we talked to Ahmed about it, he was equally excited.
Dan Hernandez: He totally understands all the theories and memes. He loves it. Also, I think since 25th anniversary phantom menace It led to some re-evaluation of the prequel trilogy. Of course, people younger than us. They have always loved them. I’ve actually always liked the prequels. Specifically, it prompted a reappraisal of Ahmed’s remarkable performance as Jar Jar, as well as the innovation that went into creating the character and being a trailblazer in the field of digitally created characters. This was unprecedented for him at the time. He was excited to come in and do something completely different. Ahmed improvised many of the lines in the play because Ahmed knew the character. He is this character. We were completely smitten.
Dahl: Needless to say, the multiverse has been wiped out over the past few years. Deadpool said it best, “The Wizard of Oz did it first, and they did it best.” Despite the saturation of the multiverse, this LEGO Star Wars: Rebuilding the Galaxy The miniseries is quite compelling. How do you avoid falling into obvious clichés in recent multiverse stories?
summit: That’s a great question and one that we did think about when we looked at this issue. One big difference what we’re talking about here is that it’s not really a multiverse. Some Lego bricks built the Milky Way, and the bricks themselves were rearranged. There is only one universe, and it has changed. We’re not saying there are so many different alternatives Star Wars Different things are happening in the universe. This is built with this set of LEGO bricks Star Wars Universes, we smash them to pieces and rebuild them, and that’s all that’s left. Along those lines, another thing that makes it feel a little different from the rest of the multiverse is the fact that it has such a strong connection to LEGO itself. They didn’t find a way to shoehorn in a multiverse story that felt disconnected from the actual content itself. We have real reasons for doing this.
Hernandez: I’d also like to say that the show’s main characters are all original characters, with Jedi Bob being a character “in the LEGO sense” but not voiced or seen in other media. We have five original characters telling the story. All the other characters we’re more familiar with add texture and comedy. I think starting with these original characters allows us to get to know them as we learn about this new version of the galaxy. I think it feels fresher this way.
summit: We also have some rules for it that help us in different ways than other multiverses. Along the lines of what I’m saying, there’s only one galaxy, and it’s been recreated with only one character in it. Luke Skywalker was the Luke of the old galaxy, now he’s “Beach Luke.” Beach Luke cannot interact with Classic Luke. We didn’t want to see five different Luke minifigures talking to each other. Although our aim with this collection was to recreate the feeling of emptying out a LEGO bin and mixing and matching. Technically, if you empty out your LEGO bin, you’ll end up with five Luke minifigures and multiple other figures. But this is where I think it’s going to get into dark multiverse territory. If there are five Lukes talking to each other, what are the stakes for any one of those Lukes? But this is Luke in this galaxy. There is no other Luke. Everything changes when this is the Luke you’re stuck with now.
Dahl: The series ends with a major tease. Not sure if you want to hold off on spoilers or just say it.
Hernandez: We’ll tell. It’s Landalor and Grogu Jr!
Dar: Can we expect more to come?
Hernandez: I would say we are very hopeful. We definitely have a lot of ideas to tell the story. As you can imagine, there are so many characters, planets, creatures, and ships that we couldn’t cover them all in four episodes. If we’re lucky enough to continue this story, we’ll have more ideas.
Dahl: James Earl Jones tragically passed away the same week this week LEGO Star Wars Rebuilds the Galaxy Miniseries premieres. It is no exaggeration to say Star Wars Nothing would be the same without his iconic performance as the voice of Darth Vader. I’d love to hear what you think he’s right Star Wars Franchise?
summit: Unfortunately we never got the chance to meet him. But I can definitely say that without him, we wouldn’t be sitting here. He is partly responsible for this important event Star Wars become. He created some of the most iconic villains of all time. The scale of his legacy is even hard to fathom.
Hernandez: I totally agree. We were lucky enough to still have people around us who had been there from the beginning. Mark Hamill Be special to us. We don’t want to be nerdy, but he’ll provide stories from the making of new hope. He would say, “This reminds me of a time when I was with george [Lucas] When we were shooting the award ceremony scene. It is worth noting that it is real and not a myth. These are real people and people you can talk to. James Earl Jones accomplished so much on this planet. What a remarkable legacy that we strive to honor and live up to. I think the biggest testament to that is that it’s going to last for decades. People will remember Darth Vader, and they will remember Darth Vader because of James Earl Jones.
