The PlayStation 5 is getting another system update that will start rolling out five new features, including a surprising one that will let players add more customizations to the home screen. It’s not the full-blown background theme fans have been asking for, but it’s a start.
Sony calls it the “Welcome Center,” and it’s a replacement for the exploration mod that’s on the home screen when you first log into the console. This sounds a bit like the current setup of the Xbox Series X/S, except that players can customize which mods appear and where. PlayStation Blog Some examples were given, including “console storage, battery power for accessories, online friends, trophies, and more.”
You can also choose different backgrounds specifically for your Welcome Center, including images from a folder of screenshots captured by players while playing their favorite games. Like I said, it’s not a replacement for the rest of the console’s background themes, but it’s a start. Now it would be nice if there was a widget that could protect my PS5 from suddenly losing power before shutting down.
The rest of today’s update includes Previously previewed features below:
- Shared by the parties
- Personalized 3D Audio Profile
- Adjustable remote playback settings
- Controller adaptive charging
Party Share lets you easily connect to party voice chat groups on social media and mobile devices, personalized 3D audio lets you create presets based on your headphones and unique hearing sensors, and adjustable remote playback settings let you save Message friends so they can use your PS5 whenever they’re around. Adaptive Charging is the coolest of them all, making it more cost-effective to charge while the console is in rest mode, but it’s only available on the newer PS5, including Slim model and PS5 Pro will launch in November.
