Embracer Group, the company that owns Middle-earth Enterprises, has confirmed that multiple new Lord of the Rings games are in the early stages of development. As part of Embracer’s latest earnings briefing, the company said it is “actively testing and prototyping multiple new game concepts.”
Embracer says its efforts in this area include “exploring a variety of immersive and authentic gameplay in Middle-earth.”
The publisher went on to say that it will take an “honest and tactical approach” to making the games, aiming to create “authentic storytelling.”
“We believe that early and deep engagement with our community is critical to creating experiences that truly resonate,” said Embracer. “We’ve been working hard with our own creative team, other world-class creators, and our passionate fan base to create [The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit]”.
Previously, Embracer’s Lord of the Rings boss Lee Guinchard spoke about his hopes for a revival of the Lord of the Rings games.
Embracer is currently working with Amazon Games on a new MMO set in Middle-earth. Another upcoming Lord of the Rings game is the cozy-looking Legends of the Shire, due out later this year. As Ginchard said in the above interview, there are multiple new Lord of the Rings games in development that have yet to be announced.
There have been many iconic Lord of the Rings games over the years. In particular, some of the earlier movie tie-ins were popular, and the more recent Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War are also fun. On a less serious note, the LEGO Lord of the Rings and LEGO Hobbit series are also remembered. Check out the gallery below for some of the best Lord of the Rings games ever made.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a less fondly remembered Lord of the Rings game that launched in 2023 but received very low ratings. Following the game’s release, developer Daedalic canceled the next Lord of the Rings game in development and announced that it would no longer be making any games.
In addition to video games, Embracer is working with Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema on several upcoming films, including Gollum. Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings series, will return to direct the film.
