In 1996, Poltergeist received its first TV series, Poltergeist: The Legacy, which was only loosely connected to the film. The show ran for four seasons and ended in 1999, but now Amazon-MGM Studios has a new take on the prankster TV series.
Through Variety, the Poltergeist series has hired two showrunners and executive producers: Kalinda Vazquez and Robbie Thompson. Of the pair, Vazquez has appeared in a wider variety of shows, including “Nikita,” “Prison Break,” “The Walking Dead,” “Once Upon a Time” and “Star Wars: Discovery.” Thompson’s experience primarily comes from Supernatural, the long-running genre drama on which he served as co-executive producer for several seasons. He is also the creator and showrunner of the prequel series The Winchesters.
There are no story details about the Poltergeist TV series yet, except that it was inspired by the original 1982 film and the house in it was recently sold. Poltergeist has had two sequels in theaters, while the 2015 remake was poorly received.
Directed by Tobe Hooper, The Evil Dead tells the story of the Freeling family who are haunted by increasingly malevolent ghosts. Steven Spielberg conceived the story and co-wrote the screenplay for the film. Spielberg’s Amblin Television has also teamed up with Amazon-MGM Studios to produce the new Poltergeist series.
