Paramount and a resurgent Republic Pictures are betting on independent films to complement their tentpole films, such as mission impossible and Gladiator II.
Speaking at the MIPCOM Media Mastermind keynote in Cannes on Tuesday afternoon, the studio’s chief content licensing officer, Dan Cohen, confirmed U.S. and Canadian rights to its “Coen Brothers-esque” film noir adulthooddirected by Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure Stars Alex Winter has been picked up by Republic Pictures.
“You’re going to get a message today,” Cohen, who is also president of Republic Pictures, told moderator Anna Carugati of World Screen. “We have a movie coming out adulthood. A bit like the Coen brothers [story]. The series stars Josh Gad and Kaya Scodelario. This is a very interesting movie. We also have a movie called bad apple Coming from Saoirse Ronan, she has been nominated for an Oscar four times and I think she is a good actor working today.
He continued: “So we’re trying to make interesting independent films to complement the blockbusters [like] mission impossible, Gladiator II at Christmas time, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 At Christmas time.
The entire meeting was dominated by the surrounding discussions NCIS spin off NCIS: Tony and Zivacreated by John McNamara and starring returning actors Michael Weatherly and Cort de Pablo, who also serve as executive producers on the show. “Their show is nothing short of magic. Their chemistry is undeniable. They’re absolute fan favorites,” Cohen said ahead of a brief trailer for the upcoming series, which shows the characters raising their children. The flame was rekindled as a young daughter.
Cohen continued: “Yes, they made some cameos, but they haven’t been on air together in 12 years, and that’s the story fans ask about the most.”
Pablo said of the show, which is expected to be released in 2025: “I think fans have been wanting to see what happens in the show. [Tony and Ziva]… We find out they’re raising their kid in Europe, who’s almost a teenager, wonderful little Tully, and they’re trying to make their relationship work.
Weatherly highlights global appeal NCIS This enhances the energy behind this spin-off. “I have the opportunity to work with NCIStraveling to Australia, Italy, Germany, England and France, it became this very decidedly international exhibition. It’s this global impact…it’s about a family in danger, trying to find a way to do the right thing, breathing in the environment, two people trying to communicate, two people trying to love each other.
