Everyone who attends a comic convention comes away with their “con story,” whether it’s a chance meeting with their favorite creator during the “barcon,” a hysterical moment with friends, or a reaction to a flight that took place at Sorry for all the delays on the way to Santiago.
We’ve all heard a story, but this year I overheard the hottest scam story of all time at the Bayfront, a story about two comic book creators and the three-alarm fire that destroyed their Air BNB in the Gaslamp. I’m going to bring it to you now “Gaslight” is the “most popular” scam story in comics.
I caught up Chris Miskiewicz, author “This Is Where We Fall” and “The Origins of the Grateful Dead” & Sean von Gormanillustrator “Pedestrian” and “Ghost Planet” They were seen at the Bayfront Bar the next day, hours after the Eisner incident, where a group of industry professionals gathered to listen as 13 fire trucks shut down the Gaslamp Quarter for much of Friday. story.Fire in the kitchen Rei Do Gado Brazilian Steakhouse, More than a hundred people in Air BNB were forced from their homes after trying to circumvent hotel occupancy laws…
Chris Miskiewicz:
The most important thing is that Sean and I are fine, and so are the more than 100 other people staying at Air BNB. But yeah, it was a weird night. I attend the Eisner Festival with my long-time creative partner Vincenkins Who because of “time dog“In the series, when my phone started exploding with calls from Air BNB, SDFD, and SDPD, I ignored all of them until Sean Von Gorman sent a simple text saying: “Our Air BNB is on the way. Burn. Call me.
So, if you were there, yes, I was the one pacing behind with the phone to my ear. Anyway, to put it simply, we were locked out for several hours until just before midnight the SDFD allowed us to return and they took us into a dark, dank, shabby room to get things by flashlight. I’ve left places in a hurry before, but this was special. As we were packing up in the dark, the firefighters told us that the place was over capacity, in violation of San Diego hotel occupancy laws, and that they needed a staff member on site 24/7, but that was not the case. Things got weird when we were told the Red Cross was being asked to “provide emergency housing,” and Sean and I walked out into the night with our bags on our backs, dropped a credit card, and booked a room for one price. Food for the family week, we dumped our stuff in there and looked at each other, smiling tiredly, when one of us said, “Bay Bar?” So we went back and closed it down with a group of friends in the industry.
I have to say this part because I feel like it was the most important thing that night. – 2024 has been a strange year for comics, dividing more than uniting. That night, Sean and I saw the “comic people” at their best, and as the story spread around the bar, dozens of people came up to us, offering couches, beds, space in their rooms, anything they could to help. This is the comics community that I know, love, and proudly continue to be a part of. – If you may, a huge thanks to IDW’s Aub Driver and Sean Bryce for coming to the rescue. I will always have a bucket of favors for you if you need it. – Thank you everyone. #Makecomics
Sean von Gorman:
I spent the day at the Magma Comix booth promoting the SDCC launch of our new series Pedestrians with Joey Esposito, until I left to prepare the Eisner piece in support of our nominated friend Vincent Jeans ( Vincent Kings, when I turned the corner and saw the street outside our Airbnb blocked off by a dozen fire trucks. Several hours passed before we were able to get back to the unit, where the SDFD used flashlights to guide us up the stairs and into a dark, dank, smoke-filled room to collect our belongings, from which we fled and returned. I went to the Bay Boat, mainly because I was exhausted.
Thinking back on that night, I’m constantly reminded of how easy it is to turn on each other these days, and how, in the exact opposite way, I’m humbled by the support from the comics community. Everyone offered to help us find a place to rest. I remember my friend Riley Brown running over with concerned eyes and saying, “I just heard that. Are you okay? There are four of us in the room, but we’ll figure it out and you can stay with us! Sometimes you It can feel lonely in this industry, but it’s really cool to see firsthand that if you make comics, if you’re a member of this community, no matter what level you’re at in the game, if something bad happens, you’re not alone.
