On Monday night, an official OpenAI account on X was compromised and used to peddle a cryptocurrency scam.
At 6:24 pm ET on Monday, the @OpenAINewsroom account, which shared news about OpenAI and has nearly 54,000 followers, published a now-deleted post advertising the “$OPENAI” token.
“We are very excited to announce $OPEANAI: the token that bridges the gap between artificial intelligence and blockchain technology,” the post reads. “All OpenAI users are eligible to claim a portion of the initial supply of $OPENAI. Holding $OPENAI will grant access to all of our future testing programs. The post also included a link to a spoofed version of the OpenAI website, which is not openai.com.
When I visited the website, there was a section for claiming $OPENAI cryptocurrency. When I clicked the button it asked me to connect the wallet but I didn’t do that.
OpenAI and X did not immediately respond to requests for comment. As of this writing, the OpenAI Newsroom account has not posted anything to explain what may have happened. The account was launched earlier this month.
