The classic 90s animated film Ninja Reel will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year with a number of major events, including a limited theatrical release in North America in September, followed by a new Collector’s Edition Blu-ray October 22. The Blu-ray is packaged in a steel case, includes a handful of bonus content, and is available for pre-order at a variety of retailers.
You can even get deep discounts on Amazon and Target, saving over 30% on pre-orders. This is obviously a hefty price cut, but considering Ninja Scroll’s limited-edition Steelbook has a pretty ridiculous $70 price tag, the discount may be a bit exaggerated to make up for it.
$47.49 (originally $70)

The Ninja Scrolls Limited Edition Steelbox contains a Blu-ray copy of the animated film in 1080p with English or Japanese dub and English subtitles. It also comes with a full audio commentary from director Yoshiaki Kawajiri and character designer Yukata Minowa. You also get a stylish steel book box with promotional art on the cover and interior panels, and a removable slipcase.
You can pre-order Ninja Scroll Collector’s Edition on Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Crunchyroll ahead of its release on October 22. Amazon and Target are taking pre-orders for $47.49, which is significantly lower than the Ninja Scroll’s (rather ridiculous) $70 price tag. Amazon is initially opening pre-orders for $70, but if you’ve already ordered it, Amazon will automatically give you the best price until you pay, which doesn’t happen until your order ships. Walmart is still selling Ninja Scroll for $70, while Crunchyroll is selling for $52.49.
For those unfamiliar with the film, Ninja Scroll is a violent, action-packed story set in feudal Japan during the Edo period. The film follows wandering swordsman Jubei Kiugami who finds himself embroiled in a supernatural conspiracy to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate. Although it originally premiered in Japan in 1993, it wasn’t officially released in North America until 2012. For example, despite this, it still became one of the most popular animations of the 90s, ranking among other animated works aimed at mature audiences. “Akira,” “Ghost in the Shell” and the original “Berser” TV series.
Speaking of Berserk, you can pick up the original 1997 Blu-ray collection for $46 (originally $60). The collection was released earlier this year and will be followed later this month by the Berserker: Golden Age Arc Commemorative Edition ($20 off). Meanwhile, the 4K Blu-ray version of “Akira” is only $18, and “Ghost in the Shell” is only $14.
