From the classic Pac-Man arcade machine to today’s portable Nintendo Switch, video games have long been at the forefront of technological innovation. Now, Nex Playground is pushing the envelope again, fusing screen time with physical movement, creating a new wave of active play that challenges our ideas about fun and movement.
Nex Playground Combining motion and motion detection technology for outdoor sports, we have Nex Playground. We often hear about the dangers of screen time, but can it be healthy if paired appropriately with physical activity and cooperative play?
Dr. Emily Greenwald, MD, consultant pediatrician at Nex Playground, thinks so.
Many of the games on Nex Playground are also designed to promote children’s development in multiple areas, including gross motor skills, cognitive skills and critical thinking. Some games that encourage high activity levels even have built-in “calm” sections, where children must practice self-regulation from being very energetic to completing tasks calmly and slowly. Practicing self-regulation is important for young children.
There are games for kids, the whole family and adults. A special component is Nex’s partnership with Sesame Workshop, a franchise that has been focusing on children’s health through screens for decades.
Games such as Elmo and Abby’s Magical Letter Hunt Helps children improve their letter recognition and cognitive skills, while also helping them with their physical gross motor skills. For older kids, games like this galaxy Provides similar benefits in teamwork development, focus, reasoning, and problem solving.
“The great thing about our Sesame Street Nex games is that not only do kids get to interact and have fun with their favorite characters in innovative, active ways, but each character has a ‘Take a Break’ prompt that allows players to Being able to do that — step away and reorient yourself,” said Michelle Kaplan, Director of Learning Design, Curriculum and Content at Sesame Workshop. “It’s always good to check yourself and act accordingly. Another thing to note is that the game does not log or collect any identifiable data about players. We want to ensure that children stay safe while engaging with our content.
Many of today’s modern recreational activities put a pause on movement and encourage children to sit for long periods of time. Nex Playground aims to not belong to that narrative.
“The future of active play holds great promise for shaping children’s health and development,” Greenwald said. “It has the potential to become the cornerstone of healthy habits, combating sedentary lifestyles by providing fun, engaging and physically active screen time options in a world where screen time seems inevitable.”
