Amazon Prime Video’s The Expanse is one of the best science fiction shows of this century, and as they say, the books are even better. If you love science fiction but haven’t read it yet, James S.A. Corey’s series is definitely worth your time and the nine novels in it. But if you’re here, chances are you already love The Expanse , so you’ll be happy to hear that Cory’s new series Captives begins this week. Gods Have Mercy, the first novel in Corey’s latest space opera, is now available in hardcover on Amazon for $27 (originally $30).
Alternatively, you can purchase the Kindle e-book version for $15, or the Audible audiobook for $12 (originally $17), or use Audible Credit if you’re a Premium Plus subscriber.
But it’s actually based on the popular series of novels by James S.A. Corey. The author (James S.A. Corey is the pseudonym of screenwriting duo Daniel Abraham and Ty Frank) is currently working on a new space opera, Captive War. The first book in the series, The Mercy of the Gods , just hit shelves today, and you’ll find it on sale day for just $26 (originally $30).

The writing duo behind Sky of the Sky – James SA Corey is the pseudonym of writers Daniel Abraham and Ty Frank – have been building to the story from the outset of Leviathan Awakens The game has made an extraordinary contribution to the believable world aspect of “The Firmament”. Early reviews of “God’s Mercy” suggest that Corey’s new series will demonstrate the same kind of prowess. Amazon’s book editors named “The Mercy of the Gods” one of the best science fiction and fantasy novels of August.
Gods Have Mercy sets up The Captives as a darker, more sinister space opera than The Expanse . The story takes place in a galaxy where aliens known as “Carryx” have destroyed civilization and enslaved species. But when Kerix encounters seemingly invincible foes, they turn to humans to assist in their mission. After Angie came to the world of Inin, Kerix kidnapped scientists and took them back to his home to start a war with other prisoners. The price of failure was extinction.
The 432-page novel centers on Dafyd Alkhor, a scientist assistant who is forced to fight in the war. As you might expect, nothing is as it seems.
The book’s description provides a compelling teaser for what’s to come in the world of Dafyd and Anjiin, so it’ll be interesting to see how Capture Wars evolves as the series becomes more extensive (sorry).
What follows is a lengthy (432 pages) story centered on assistant Dafyd Alkhor. Like The Expanse, you’ll find plenty of provocative sci-fi storylines, as well as plenty of personal, nuanced interactions between Alcor and his fellow captives. Early reviews have been positive, and for fans of James S.A. Corey’s previous work, it’s an easy recommendation.
Once you close the cover of Gods Have Mercy, you can pre-order Livesuit, the first novella in the Captive War series, for $3 ahead of its release on October 1st. Like some of the short stories and novellas in The Expanse, Livesuit will be released digitally only.
