The new Expedition was shown off for the first time today in Texas via a drone light show, and it looks like it only has the left half of Lincoln’s 48-inch pillar-to-column panoramic display, leaving only a 24-inch panel.
You’ll find the same instrument cluster and navigation cluster in front of the driver’s seat, but without Lincoln’s widget that extends the right half of the screen. The Expedition’s smaller center touchscreen sits below it and also runs Google Play Store apps, operates Apple CarPlay, and has digital HVAC controls, just like the Lincoln. The car also offers Google Assistant and Alexa voice assistants (one at a time), and some models also offer BlueCruise hands-free driving.
Pillar-to-pillar panoramic screens have become a flashy feature that manufacturers have recently introduced on their most luxurious vehicles. They are often positioned as infotainment centers for front-seat passengers, allowing them to watch streaming videos and even play some PlayStation.
Ford is selling a standard-wheelbase Expedition and a longer version of the “Max.” In the middle row, you have your choice of bench or captain’s chairs; there are clips on the backs of the first-row headrests to secure smartphones or tablets for middle-row passengers. The Expedition comes with a bench option and can accommodate up to 8 people.
At first glance, the Expedition appears to be a clone of the new Lincoln Navigator, with a split rear door, a light bar at the front, and a similar 3.5-liter V6 engine under the hood. (This is Ford’s “EcoBoost.”) The Credition’s new Tremor trim puts out up to 440 horsepower, with a tuned suspension and a unique off-road mode for more off-road capability. Like the Navigator, the Ford Expedition does not offer a hybrid powertrain option.
