Review by Hayley Gold nevosa Karol Weaver said on graphicmedicine.org:
“Haley Gold nevosa The author’s experience and treatment of anorexia nervosa are traced. This vivid memoir describes Gold’s anorexia, her hospitalization, and her attempts to navigate relationships and school while coping with the disease and its symptoms and complications. Gold uses color and imagery to educate readers about the disease and its impact on her. While difficult to read due to its discussion of eating disorders and self-harm (trigger warning) as well as legitimate criticism of the health care system (particularly psychiatric care), “Nervosa” demonstrates that Gold is an accomplished artist and skilled writer, but claimed she struggled with her identity alongside an eating disorder that consumed her hopes and dreams.
In the announcement of the shortlist, GMIC talks about Elaine M. Will’s 12-page mini-comic spiral meeting:
“Using exquisite digital inks and white highlights on a sepia-toned background, Spiral Sessions feels both a clear, fresh artistic voice and a timeless work of art that showcases the most basic of human emotions.”
