Microsoft is making Skype ad-free in an update that will be rolling out to users on all platforms soon. The update also includes improved AI imaging tools on Skype for Windows and macOS, as well as the ability to automatically sign in on iOS if you’re already signed into another Microsoft app.
Removing ads in Skype means you will no longer see ads in the main chat interface or in the channel section. Microsoft says it has listened to feedback about Skype ads and decided to “focus on your chats without any ad interruptions, making your Skype experience cleaner and more user-friendly.”
However, the “Today” section of Skype will remain, complete with News Feed powered by MSN. I’m sure most Skype users ignore this tab, but if you want to get rid of it completely, you can still disable it in Settings > Appearance.
In addition to removing ads in Skype, Microsoft has also improved the AI imaging capabilities within the app on Windows and macOS. You’ll soon be able to quickly access the AI image creator in the chat window, and AI-generated images will expand on click. Microsoft has also fixed some UI elements while also making Apple’s macOS design feel more familiar to video creators.
Microsoft is also bringing OneAuth integration to Skype for iOS, which allows you to automatically sign in to another Microsoft app if you’re already using that app. If you’re having trouble sending photos or videos using Skype over 5G, Microsoft is fixing the bug in an update to be released in the coming days.
