Mexico selects Sundance Film Festival winners dirty Represent the country at the 2025 Academy Awards for Best International Film. The play comes from Identifying features Directors Astrid Landero and Fernanda Valadez premiered the film at Sundance this year, where it won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize. The film is currently on the festival circuit and will screen at the San Sebastian and London Film Festivals this fall.
The coming-of-age story centers on the titular Su Jiao, the son of a small-town cartel killer who is orphaned when his father is murdered as a traitor. Under constant death threats – the cartel traditionally kills the male heirs of assassinated members lest they grow up to avenge their fathers – Sujo hid in the mountains, isolated with only his aunt and two young children Accompanied by cousins. But as a young man, Sujo was Identifying features Actor Juan Jesús Varela returns to the world of crime and clashes with his father’s legacy.
Also starring Adira Perez, Alexis Valera, Sandra Lorenzano, Jarro Hernandez and Kevin Aguilar dirty. Landreau and Valadez with Diana Casareal, Jewel Keats Ross, Virginie de Vessa, Jean-Baptiste Bailly-Mette and Nicolas Sellis co-produced the film.
The Forge has acquired North American rights to the film, which will launch in limited release on November 29th.
Mexico received nine nominations for Best International Film and won once: for Alfonso Cuarón Romans 2018. totemAlejandro G. Iñárritu bardoTatiana Vezzo’s Pray for those who were stolenand Fernando Frias’ i’m no longer here —was on the Oscar shortlist but failed to win a nomination.
The shortlist for the 2025 Best International Film will be announced on December 17.
