Yes, things are happening, Mattel, the toy company behind Barbie and Hot Wheels, is developing a live-action feature film based on the View-Master, a stereoscopic imaging device.
The film project was established by Sony Pictures and produced by Escape Artists. The View-Master was introduced in 1939, and Mattel describes the toy as “a childhood staple enjoyed by generations.”
The toy “has captivated fans around the world with its scrolls of 3D graphics, creating a world of imagination and storytelling for every adventure seeker at heart.”
Plot details have yet to be announced, but Mattel Films president Robbie Brenner said in a statement: “View-Master has inspired generations of people to embark on limitless adventures and provides a narrative for this film. A treasure trove of story possibilities.
“We are excited to partner with Sony Pictures Entertainment and Todd Black of Escape Artists to bring this series from Mattel to life. Their creative and filmmaking expertise is instrumental in introducing this beloved franchise to audiences around the world. The modern style of the toys lays the foundation.
Escape Artists’ Black added: “View-Master has long been a window into the wonders of the world, inspiring the imaginations of children and adults alike.
“Partnering with Robbie Brenner and Mattel Films gives us the opportunity to honor this tradition while creating an all-new adventure for today’s audiences. We can’t wait to bring the sense of discovery of this treasured toy to the big screen.”
I could imagine this being a fun horror movie, but I doubt Mattel would go in that direction. What is your pitch for the View-Master movie?
Mattel is currently developing several films based on its toy portfolio. These projects include “American Girl,” “Barney,” Vin Diesel’s “Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robot” and the card game Uno, a collaboration with rapper Lil Yachty.
