It’s always a big deal when a major show ends, and next year, Netflix will say goodbye stranger things Five seasons later. For many actors, the show gave them some of the breakout roles they used to help build their careers, but leaving them behind after so long can trigger a variety of emotions.
Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin, recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he’s somewhere in the middle. By his own admission, he was initially ready to finish the final season, but now that the show is nearing production, his tune has understandably changed. Now, he finds himself recalling how young he was when he and costars like Caleb McLaughlin and Millie Bobby Brown were starting out. Like a senior on the verge of graduating high school, he feels a little stuck in time: The “unique things” from Season 1 feel like they happened very recently.
“At this moment, I’m almost doing it stranger things “Longer than I’ve ever had,” Matarazzo said. “It’s quite shocking to realize how quickly it all went by. […] From a work and life perspective, accepting to let go is increasingly difficult. Whether it’s professionally or emotionally, you can always look forward to next season. So it’s going to be a different adjustment and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
As for what happens next strange things, Matarazzo had some fun banter. Dustin played a different character in previous seasons, and now it’s happening with the entire main cast. He told The Hollywood Reporter that all of them will be paired up differently than the usual groupings, which will lead to “a lot of fun opportunities” for everyone. Without revealing anything, he said Dustin will share screen time with his character and Not before. “It’s a good balance of being familiar and keeping the family close,” he joked, “but also seeing how much we can elevate the relationships between these characters.”
