Topsy Turvy from Mary Poppins Returns
Topsy Turvy is a character in the musical film “Mary Poppins Returns”, played by Meryl Streep. Her outfits are eclectic, quirky and fit her personality. Her costume has a lot of parts, but once broken down, it’s not difficult to assemble and is definitely worth making.
Start with base and tuck a satin green V-neck tank top into a long black skirt. For shoes, wear green suede pumps and pink and black striped socks for a no-boot look. For her robe, choose a black and colored kimono/robe and cut off a section at the hem to sew the decoration on, or leave it and sew it on. The decoration is 12+ long green tassels. You can also cover the seam with ribbon to make it a cleaner transition. Her accessories included chunky bracelets in different colors, a colored pencil necklace and champagne tassel earrings. Wear a metal scarf or knotted bandana on your head and insert two paint fan brushes through the knot in the front in an X shape. To make the clock strap, start with a green belt as a base. Cut the base out of Bristol board, cover it with green cardstock, then place a smaller white scrap piece on top to create a clock. You can sketch a clock here, or print a clock and glue it up. On the back, use glue to attach the magnet to the belt. This makes the belt much lighter than using a real clock. Finally, make your hair similar to hers or wear a wig, and for makeup, wear yellow eyeshadow, graphic black eyeliner, and red lips.
