It seems like only yesterday that Marvel was relaunching its flagship product The Amazing Spider-Man Title and author Zeb Wells. It was certainly not without controversy, to say the least. Two years later, it’s no surprise that the publisher is relaunching the game again. The Amazing Spider-Man The title of the new creative team should be familiar to readers.
Earlier today, Polygon exclusively announced that the next era of the beloved series will be led by renowned The Amazing Spider-Man and dead Pool scribe Joe Kellylegend The Amazing Spider-Man artist John Romita Jr. and one of the industry’s most acclaimed contemporary artists, Pepe Larrasjust finished his exemplary work Blood Hunt and X-Men. The all-new The Amazing Spider-Man will tell classic Spider-Man stories and bring a bold new vision to Spider-Man; his supporting cast (including the recently redeemed Norman Osborn and Peter’s new girlfriend Shay), as well as all the popular Culture’s greatest supervillain.
Kelly is of course no stranger to Spider-Man, as she was part of the “Brand New Day” era alongside Wells. In fact, he’s currently involved in the “8 Deaths of Spider-Man” storyline, which will be the conclusion of this volume.
Here’s how the publisher describes the re-release:
In this new journey, Peter is unemployed and looking for gainful employment, but his job search is interrupted by a rampaging rhino, which is just the tip of the treacherous iceberg. Which major spider villain is behind the scenes weaponizing other spider villains, including one we haven’t seen in over seven years? Also, what is that goblin-less Norman Osborn up to these days?
As Kelly explained to Polygon:
“While this is a new #1, I don’t consider it a ‘reboot’ per se. I’m writing the next chapter in the story of the greatest man in the world, and I’m lucky enough to follow in the footsteps of those who have come before me. Understand this A little later, I spent a lot of time thinking about what I loved about Spider-Man and his cast, what stories resonated with me at different times in my life, and how I could synthesize all of that into something that fit those that had come before, But breaking new ground… I felt motivated to make bold, unexpected moves to see how Spider-Man handles Marvel-sized curveballs Pressure makes diamonds.
Lalas added:
“The most important part of Spider-Man that I wanted to accurately portray was Peter. Of course, I could talk about drawing a believable New York, the hundreds of photos I took of the city’s details for reference, or how I focused on drawing something closer to the animation. Drawing Spider-Man’s movement and speed in a non-comic way, but I think the reason Spider-Man comics work is because we care about Peter and his world, so that was my main focus: drawing a Peter that you instantly recognize and sympathize with. [with]”.
Editor Nick Lowe said:
“I don’t think we could get Joe to do a lot of The Amazing Spider-Man. Spider-Man – “He’s always busy with animation and TV and movies, so he’s usually just flitting in and out of comics. That’s why we cast him for Spider-Man. Eight Times to Die. He was doing a great job, so when he asked us if we would consider him as a continuing writer, I felt like I won the lottery, plus Pepe Larraz. Super Sonic talent, we knew we had the makings of an instant classic. Then John Romita Jr. agreed to stay… and the fireworks went off. I might as well buy a lottery ticket!
