Golden, one of the creative duo, talks about the experience of making audiobooks, e.g. Hellboy. Learn more about Golden in an interview with The Beat:
Beat: How did this audio story come about?
Gold: For several years, several companies have been interested in original works Hellboy Audio adventure. I have worked with GraphicAudio before and contacted them to discuss this issue. Scott McCormick is the real engine that gets it done. He is the director of these works and the voice of Hellraiser, but he is also the creative force behind a large body of work at GraphicAudio (writing, adapting, directing). He’s a huge fan of the universe, which helps a lot. when i first spoke Angie Cornett At GraphicAudio, I knew we would end up working together, and then talking to Scott, we immediately jumped at the idea of a trilogy of loosely connected stories set in the Mignolaverse.
THE BEAT: How is it different from your work writing scripts and casting for other media?
Gold: I’ve done this more than once and in various forms over the years. But the process feels very different. Tom Sniegoski and I wrote “Manhattan” together, but other than that, Scott McCormick and I were in a corner doing our creative work, and it felt so weird that Others are experiencing a slightly weird finished product. I didn’t get to work with any of these actors except Scott, but they all did a great job!
Beat: What is the appeal of the Hellboy universe?
Gold: We could spend hundreds of pages answering this question. Especially for Hellboy, the character is a very ordinary guy. I talk to creatives who are lucky enough to get paid to create, and I keep reminding them that while what we do is special, we don’t become special because of what we do. Hellboy is like that. He’s big and red and, of course, technically he’s from hell, but really he’s just a human being and that’s who he wants to be. I think that’s the core of what’s so appealing about this universe. That, and the imagination of Mignola and all those who contribute to the Mignolaverse have built this world. The magic, chaos, and evil are all great, but for me it’s the relationships, humanity, and bittersweetness that make it so great.
Beat: What can you tell us about this particular story?
Gold: Back in the 1930s, journalist Cynthia Tynan went on an adventure with Lobster Johnson. Now that she is an old woman, monsters begin to appear beneath the streets of Manhattan, and then on the streets. Cindy realizes they are connected to the Lobster’s ancient adventures, and when she discovers the city has called the BPRD to investigate and Hellboy is on the scene, she knows he may be the only person on Earth who can help.
Beat: Are there any trailers for fans of the characters in the Hellraiser universe?
Gold: What I’m trying to say is that we get the debut of an entirely new character in the second audio adventure, and we see his fate in this installment. I’m also glad that we finally included Liz Sherman and Abe Sapien in our audio adventures. Of course, it’s cool to focus on an older Cynthia Tynan. Every time we do one of these, we expand what fans know about these characters and their stories and timelines. I hope there are more!
