Proceeds from sales of the magazine will be used to help the author rebuild her life with her family in Cairo, Egypt.
Ordinary conversations in an average family is a 24-page 3D printed magazine, priced at $15 from Maamoul Press. The magazine is currently available for pre-order and is expected to ship from Monday (August 5).
The publisher will launch the magazine tomorrow, August 3, at Detroit’s Pop-Up for Palestine, a free-admission zine-making, letterpress printing event with a store for comics, magazines, prints and more. Maamoul Press is a small journalism collective co-founded in 2018 by artists Laila Abdulrazaq and Oh my god Aims to promote the work of creators from marginalized backgrounds and encourage artistic development in their respective communities through workshops, courses, exhibitions and distribution assistance. Their online store features a mix of their own material and material from member artists – including original Arabic versions Dina MuhammadCritically acclaimed Egyptian graphic novel Shuback Luback. Some of their recent works include Inside the big fishgo through Rawand Issa (Arabic translation from Amy Ziniara); and Aya Krisht’s magazine on the Palestinian-Lebanese border freedom to walk.
In April 2024, Maamoul Press announced via a newsletter that it would suspend publication indefinitely starting in September. Their web store will remain active, but the game’s continued availability has not yet been disclosed. Following Palestine Pop-Up, their next confirmed appearance will be at the Autooptic Festival in Minneapolis on August 17th.
