I’ve recently peeked at a new comic called Barrel and hammerthe plan will appear in the next issue Judge Dred Megazine. draw Luke Horsman, script David Barnettand by Simon Bowlandthe area is a pair of farce pirates drawn to the Galaxy Scavenger hunt.
Chapter 1 is full of action, keen humor, and of course the space pirates. It’s all so cool, if not enough, the characters are some of the best Madcap designs I’ve seen in a while, especially Barrel, whose fists have giant barrels facing each other in place of one of his fists (see below!). As a big fan of Horsman Art, I took the opportunity to check out Barrel and hammer Talk to him and Barnett early on about the new story and the creation of these characters.
You can view our chat below…you can read Barrel and hammer In this month Judge Dredd Megazine No. 479 April 16th in the UK… Enjoy!
Luke Horsman and David Barnett talk barrel and hammer
Q: So, this is about Space Pirates. Apart from Space Pirates It’s just that it’s cool in nature, let each of you do it Barrel and hammer?
Luke Horsman: At first, Barrel & Hammer was just a silly, instant morning character sketch that I warmed up every day. Gradually, every time I go back to sketching to finish them, I realize that they might actually be worth the effort and developing a striptease, once the name of “Barrel & Hammer” was implemented by designing the character, I immediately thought they could work well in Prog/Dredd Meg.
I contacted David (Barnett) because we had a good rapport over the years and asked if he would like to participate in the creation and play his magic. We then fired it to Tharg through the atmosphere for approval and happily approved it.
David Barnett: Strangely, this is the first collaboration between Luke and I in 2000, although we’ve been working on a fun thing for a while and that should see the light elsewhere this year.
I came up with some ideas, all at Luke’s space pirate departure point, and then sent them to Matt in 2000 AD. You’re right, Space Pirates are naturally cool, we want to use this large time, spacious canvases and many weird characters to play with.
Q: The character design is very interesting – from heroes to probably my favorite tentacle face Lauman – they also feel very unique. How did these come about?
DB: Since Luke first proposed the character design and established the look of the entire striptease, it was easy to rely on his strengths whenever I came up with a new character with a storyline. Honestly, I left him for it, just the simplest character description – he figured out the overall feeling of the story, so it was fun to watch him get angry with each new character.
LH: Endless graffiti, I usually feel like a pipe for character design when sketching. There was an idea in my mind, which was a little confused. This may have been more than 40 years of absorbing cartoons and comics. It just fell out of my head. This helps the comics! But very few.
Q: I like the tone of this story, all the fun feelings. How do each of you deal with incorporating humor into your work?
DB: Just think this has to be both an interesting and interesting story. I’ve always loved Capers and those absolutely crazy ensemble movies This is a crazy, crazy, crazy worldthere are many characters competing for prizes. So we have already played a treasure hunt on the Galaxy in order to be accepted to the rights of the Space Pirates Association, which has brought great benefits. Barrel & Hammer really wanted this award very much because despite their talk, they weren’t doing well at Space Pirates and needed a break.
LH: I think the title cemented its voice immediately after birth – like most British humor, it was stupid and farce, and many of the designs were crying for jokes. I remember David writing the tone page, and for a moment, our cleaning robot Hammer took out a broom from programming and unfortunately swept a dismembered opponent. This is David’s genius. The first thing I wanted to do was to have his giant hammer spread out like dust and sweep it into it.
There are few moments of organic creativity, bounce back against each other. I want to think that if I paint, it makes me laugh, it will at least make fun of another person.
Q: We have a tip, but by the end of this adventure, how many Barrel and hammer Will the audience see the backstory?
LH: Oh, we explored a lot of backstory. Obviously, I’m not spoiling anything here, but there’s something interesting to open up in the first miniseries.
DB: Initially, we conducted four episodes to test the waters. If people like it and want to see more, there will definitely be more. Aside from a wider story of the treasure hunt, this will bring competitive pirates to strange places, and there is more to be a good place, and there is a backstory about how barrels and hammers blend together.
The barrel is a professional pirate, but as far as we know, Hammer is a former service robot with a human brain floating in a jar on his shoulder. But is he really? That’s what Hammer thinks, but we do have hints that Barrel has a lot more to know about what’s going on. Some of them were dripped in the first four episodes, but it was necessary to find out exactly what people had to love it to speak up. Seriously, why not?
Q: In the end, what is the scope of the story that you all think of? We may see more when the first adventure is over Barrel and hammer?
DB: Assuming we can continue, we might see the end of the storyline of the treasure hunt…but there is no guarantee that Barrel & Hammer will win. Whether they do this or not, it’s a large ancient galaxy, neither of them will have trouble.
LH: I like to think there is more scope for stupidity and adventure. We took it as a rather open story arch to keep it going and I certainly would be happy to continue their misfortune. They are probably the most interesting characters I have ever had in years. I will draw them forever.
Barrel & Hammer Will Appear in Judge Dredd Megazine 479, released in the UK on April 16
