We’re still in shock at the utter madness director Fede Alvarez unleashed at the end of the film Alien: Romulus. Just when you think this is going to be a basic humans vs. aliens movie, he kicks things up a notch with an ending that may not be for everyone, but is still memorable. Let’s dig into what happened, what it could mean, how we got there, and all that spoiler stuff.

    io9 spoilers

as we near the end Alien: RomulusWren (Kelly Spaeny) and Andy (David Jonsson) have killed enough aliens to successfully return to their ship. There, they found their upcoming friend Kay (Isabella Merced), who had been feeling uncomfortable before and secretly injected herself with mysterious black mucus. Then, just as they were about to drift off into a good night’s sleep, Kai’s pod popped up. There is a problem. Her child is about to be born, but the child is not human. Due to the goo, her child grows very quickly and is a hybrid of human and alien, referred to as “offspring” in the end credits. It kills her, Wren blows it out of the bottom of the ship, and everything is fine… everyone but Andy and Wren are dead.

There’s a lot to dig into in all of this, so let’s start with the sticky stuff. We’ve seen this slime before, most notably Prometheus It is similarly destructive. exist alien Fandom, real name is Chemical A0-3959X.91. It was created by engineers and was probably directly responsible for the creation of the Alien and more. It’s always been there, and it’s never a good thing. Here, though, Rook (an Ash-like robot who looks like the late Ian Holm) claims that Wayland Utani are able to extract this substance from the xenomorphs, which they believe is a cure-all Disease medicine. This means that the Wayland-Yutani don’t want the xenomorphs as weapons, they want them to save humanity. Talk about a twist, if this were true.

But we don’t believe this is true. The film shows the black goo first curing a lab rat, who then transforms into a hybrid rat and dies, which is what the substance does in all other movies. Is the company looking for xenomorphs or is this mysterious build mod they have? Does Rook really believe this is a cure or does he want it because it’s a killer? What became of the slime over the next few years? The movie doesn’t answer any questions, so we can only guess.

Then there’s the hybrid creature, the Offspring, which looks just like the man who was recently crowned the world’s tallest man Guinness World Records. The idea for this creature came almost directly from alien resurrection There, the alien queen gave birth to a human/alien hybrid with the help of her mother Ripley. This is human birth, though, which is why the offspring look a little more human. when that happened resurrectionwhich didn’t go over well with fans, but here, I feel like it will. Why? Well, because with resurrection The idea of the queen having a human reproductive system was eventually brought up, and the arrival of offspring was slowly teased throughout.

First, we learn that Kai is pregnant. Rook then talks about this slime and we look through the dead hybrid rat to see what it can do. So when Kai takes the slime away, we know it’s a bad thing. These little messages throughout prepare us for what eventually happens. This way, Alvarez can really show off the stunning, terrifying Slenderman creature he and his team designed, and it’s better than resurrection. This is another reason why the idea works better here. This creature is much more interesting and realistic. Therefore, more terrible. Future generations will give us nightmares in the coming months.

As for whether we’ll see Wren and Andy continue their adventures, only the box office gods know. We expect, though, that if we pick up the story as they head to the distant planet of Yavaga, something bad will definitely happen. Always. Especially now that we know the aliens have a fail-safe system that keeps them stagnant in space. This would definitely change the ending of some other movies, wouldn’t it?

What’s your stance on hybrid “descendants”? What are the uses and effects of black slime? Let us know below.

    Alien: Romulus Now in theaters.
