Feiffer won an Oscar for the animated short “Monroe” and went on to receive multiple Writers Guild of America Award nominations for scripts such as “Carnal Knowledge” and “Little Murders.” He has been nominated for a Tony Award and an Obie Award for his plays and a Pulitzer Prize for his cartoons, as well as Lifetime Achievement Awards from the National Cartoonists Society and the Eisner Award. Feiffer is truly a creator who transcends media and has an impact on all of them.
Jules Ralph Feiffer was born on January 26, 1929 in the Bronx to a Jewish family. davidis a basically unemployed salesman, and his mother, Rhodais a fashion designer who sells watercolor designs door to door. It was she who encouraged Jules to start drawing from an early age. When he was 13, he had a drawing table in his bedroom. His mother sent him to the Art Students League of New York to study anatomy, and he graduated from James Monroe High School in 1947.
Comics really captured Feiffer’s imagination growing up. He read the cartoon in the newspaper his father brought home and quoted our boarding house, Hutong Uppand cleaning bucket as some of his favorites. After graduating at 16, Feiffer sought employment with his idol, Will Eisner. Despite Eisner’s dislike of Feifer’s artwork, Eisner was forced to offer Feifer a low-paying job due to Feifer’s passion for his work and their similar upbringings. But eventually, their relationship blossomed and Eisner allowed Feiffer to work on the balloon Spiritbefore completing an entire story of his own.
In 1956, Feiffer stopped working with Eisner and began working on village voiceinitially for free, and later as a cartoonist, started his own comics, which he continued until 1997. Sick, sick, sickand Feiffer’s Fableeventually becoming Feiffer. He published his comic book collection, Sick, Sick, Sick: A Guide to Living with Unconfidencewhich made him a regular contributor to the magazine london observer and playboy Magazine. By April 1959, Feaver’s comic strip was distributed nationwide.
