This weekend marks the company’s one-year anniversary Baldur’s Gate 3 and its first launch on PC. Larian’s fantasy RPG was a huge boon for Hasbro: Not only was it one of the biggest games of 2023, it became an almost immediate commercial hit and picked up a ton of year-end awards. Naturally, people have been asking for more, and it turns out Larian is seriously considering giving them more.
In a recent interview with PCGamer, Larian CEO Swen Vincke revealed that the team considered staying in Dungeons and Dragons Set after their hit title has completed development. It’s “easy” for everyone to do more, and there’s still a craze for crafting, so they explore a potential expansion (or standalone title) where they just “add extra levels or make some new stories.” Then, they realized the expansion wasn’t worth the effort, and things escalated to a full sequel. It sounds like it’s at least playable, but it won’t appear until 2027 at best.
What ultimately stopped the idea from moving forward was time: Baldur’s Gate 3 Having spent several years just “doing the same thing” again doesn’t sound all that appealing. Vink expressed these thoughts in a company meeting, and everyone agreed that they should move forward and not make a sequel or expansion pack. He later confirmed the studio’s plans to the public at GDC 2024, and it sounds like it was the best decision. He called the decision a godsend, and it may have helped that all of Larian’s partners at Wizards of the Coast who helped make the game were fired late last year.
Larian rests easily Baldur’s Gate 3 kudos, but Vincke wants to “see how we can do something we’re excited about.” The studio is currently working on two projects simultaneously (one of which is codenamed “Excalibur”), and he sounds happy to “do us again.” own affairs”. We will not repeat ourselves, we will not try to convert the rules of 50 years ago into new rules. The morale was so high and you really can’t explain or express how free we were.
Considering how big of a blow it was Baldur’s Gate 3 Previously, Hasbro and Wizards were likely looking for another studio to take up the torch. It might be a while before we hear anything about it, but until then, Larian’s epic is out there, with the entire Lota game and epilogue finally waiting for you.
