Jews! The event is everything great about Comic-Con, with a deep appreciation for the contributions and Jewish roots of Serial Arts. Jewish CE! This is an amazing event at the Jewish Historical Center. The new expressions of comics, culture, and Jewish identity through this powerful art form of visual storytelling are exciting. From fun pages to graphic novels, from children’s entertainment to mature themes, from news and unique tools for empathy and education. Comics has evolved far beyond its Jewish origins, but has always maintained an often-overlooked language of visual expression.
I asked Roy Schwartz to share with us what’s new this year:
“Jewish CE! 2023 A huge success! We knew it would be popular. We had no idea how popular a house packed with top creators would be. A lot of media and people had a really good time. This is positive. It’s celebration, it’s love. This is truly a love letter, both to the comics industry and to the superhero genre and its origins in New York’s Jewish community. We are so excited to have JewCE! 2024.
I participated in the group discussion “American (Jewish) Brilliance: celebrate Harvey Point and Joyce Brabner”. Hosted by a line-up including presenters Danny Fingross, Dean Haspiel, Peter Koppel, Josh Newfield, Jeff Neuwirth, Ari Kaplan. I loved hearing them share stories about the world of underground comics.
This year also includes the “Leadership and Legacy: A Trina Robbins Tribute” panel discussion honoring the legendary comics creator’s life and impact, heidi macdonald comic beats, Barbara “Willy” Mendes and Barbara Slater. JewCE Career Achievement Award in memory of the late Trina Robbinscommemorating her outstanding contribution to comics. Famous cartoonist, writer and editor. Robbins is known for stories that often emphasize Jewish themes and the female perspective.
From Eisner Nominated Ming Yanyiden—Adapted from her father’s Yiddish book—a graphic biography of a Holocaust survivor Lily Reneeand her own Jewish teen superheroine, GoGirl! , Robbins’s work spans more than half a century. She is a multiple Eisner Award winner and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comics Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Wizarding World Legends Hall of Fame in 2017.
