Shortly before the 2023 writers and actors strike, Wednesdays star Jenna Ortega revealed that she felt the need to rewrite some of her character’s dialogue on the set of the Netflix series. Ortega felt that the lines as written were inconsistent with Wednesday Addams’ character, but her comments did not go down well with Hollywood writers. Now, Ortega has had a lot of time to reflect on what she said and how she would have done things differently.
“I could probably describe it better with my words,” Ortega told Vanity Fair. “I think, a lot of the time, I’m an aimless person. I think it’s hard because I feel like if I represented the situation better, it might be better received.”
Ortega’s comments were mocked by Writers Guild picket signs. This surprised Ortega, but it also taught her how to face the situation.
“Everything I say feels so amplified… it feels almost dystopian to me,” Ortega said. “I feel like a caricature… You’re never going to please everyone, and as a natural people-pleaser, that’s really hard for me to understand. Some people might just not like you… It’s totally It’s because it’s beautiful.
On Wednesdays Season 2, Ortega, now a producer, was encouraged to annotate both her character and the show itself. Executive producer and director Tim Burton even told Vanity Fair that he believed Ortega “could direct [the series] If she wanted to.
“I saw, from day one, she was very clear,” Burton continued. “Sometimes, she knows better than I do.”
Wednesday Season 2 will premiere on Netflix in 2025.
