James Mangold says he clearly doesn’t like the cinematic multiverse.
While the filmmaker has already directed several sequels, including Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny (2023), Logan (2017) and Wolverine (2013), he may not be planning to direct a project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is known for its “multi-movie universe-building”.
“I don’t do the multiverse,” Mangold said recently rolling stones When asked if audiences can expect Joaquin Phoenix’s Johnny Cash to return in the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet. Mangold directed Phoenix’s Oscar-nominated performance in 2005 Traces.
Director confirms fans won’t see any crossover footage Completely unknownas Boyd Holbrook played Johnny Cash in the movie.
“I loved Joaquin, but he wasn’t 30 years old, or the age Johnny was at this time. They were young people at the time,” Mangold explained. “Oddly enough, I’ve even worked in IP entertainment because I don’t like multi-cinematic universe building. I think it’s the enemy of storytelling. The death of storytelling. To people, Legos are more connected than we are. The story before you works in a more interesting way.
He continued, “For me, the goal is always, ‘What’s unique about this movie and these characters?'” Without making you think about other movies or Easter eggs or anything, it’s all an intellectual act, rather than emotional behavior. You want the movie to work on an emotional level.
It’s not uncommon for franchises to include Easter eggs related to other movies to grab viewers’ attention or include character crossovers – think about that in 2021 Spider-Man: No Way Homewhich features all three versions of the superheroes starring Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire.
Most recently, the MCU multiverse allowed Hugh Jackman to reprise his beloved Wolverine character in an upcoming film Deadpool and Wolverineas his Wolverine made a heartbreaking sacrifice in technology Logan.
While Mangold won’t be venturing into the multiverse anytime soon, that doesn’t mean he won’t be directing more sequels to the series. He will direct Lucasfilm’s upcoming feature film Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi.
