James Gunn quashes rumors of middle-aged Batman in very succinct way

As DC Studios co-head James Gunn reinvents the DC Universe, rumors surrounding superhero casting continue. Rumors about the next Batman have apparently become so widespread that Gunn decided to quash it with one very clear word: “Bullshit.”

This was Gunn’s response on Threads after a since-deleted post claimed that DC Studios “wanted a middle-aged Batman.” Logically, the debunked rumors don’t seem far-fetched, as Bruce Wayne will be co-starring with his son Damian in The Brave and the Bold. Gunn has previously stated that “Damian Wayne is my favorite Robin.” The project is inspired by Grant Morrison’s comic books and will serve as an introduction to the Bat-Family in the new DC Universe.

By the way, this isn’t the first time Gunn has decided to debunk Dark Knight rumors. In August, Gunn quashed rumors that a video game based on Batman was in the works. The series is separate from Gunn’s new DC Universe and is set in its own world, starring Rob Pattinson as the Caped Crusader. Currently, HBO’s Penguins is in the process of developing a limited edition series. The TV series will serve as the pilot series for “Batman 2” and is expected to be released in October 2026.

Meanwhile, several Batman villains are getting their own movies in the DC Universe. The bassist and Deathstroke are teaming up for a movie, with Captain America: Brave New World screenwriter Matthew Orton reportedly penning the script. It’s unclear what brings these supervillains together at this point.

In a recent DC casting call, Rebel Ridge star Aaron Pierre has been cast as John Stewart in HBO’s Green Lantern series. The DC Universe will officially begin in July 2025 with Superman: Legacy.
