James Gunn and the cast of his upcoming Max animated series biocommando He took the stage at New York Comic Con on Saturday, promising a new DC Universe title that “exceeds any of our expectations.”
The show’s executive producers and writers participated in the panel with executive producer Dean Lorey and voice actors Frank Grillo (Rick Flag Sr.), David Harbour (Frankenstein), Zoë Chao (Nina Mazursky), and Steve Agee. Economos), Maria Bakalova (Princess Ilana), Alan Tudyk (Phosphorus) and Sean Gunn (GI Robot and Weasel) watched the series trailer and had a conversation , teased the new Gunn and the first installment in the Peter Safran-led DC Universe.
Gunn confirmed during the panel that the series will be “its own thing.” Each DC Studios project will be its own thing. We hope this is very different from the previous superman When it comes out,” he pointed lantern and Supergirl: Girl of Tomorrow. “It’s an interconnected universe, but we don’t impose any monolithic aesthetic.”
Lore believes that this aesthetic is “a truly Eastern European aesthetic.” We wanted to do something grounded but with a certain style. It has a lot of very dark shades. The color palette is really cool. But as you can see, it’s very action-oriented. It’s different from Harley Quinn and shows like that. It feels more mature.
Gunn spoke about the early process of the series, which was already in the works before he took the helm at DC Studios. “This book was written when I first started as CEO of DC Studios. Max and I had been talking about creating something peacemaker Well done. Peter Girardi and I discussed doing an animated series. I like biocommando. I like monsters. i love Frankensteinstory the bride of frankenstein. It seemed like a perfect thing,” he said. “I wrote the script without a deal. And then I happened to be hired, not by DC Studios, which was very generous of me. Thank you yourself.
During the panel, each performer teased their respective characters, many of whom are described as complex monsters, with Tudyk promising “you get to see where everyone comes from, their origins, and it’s terrifying.” He added, “There are moments where you’re shocked and horrified and moved, and then the same characters make you laugh and then also cringe because they’re so violent and screwed up.”
As for other guest roles, viewers can look forward to the voices of Linda Cardellini and Michael Rooker. Gunn also singled out actresses Indira Varma, who was unable to attend the panel but voices the show’s protagonist, The Bride, and Viola Davis, who was unable to attend the panel. Davis returns as the voice of Amanda Waller. “Her performance is outstanding and her performance in the show is incredible,” he said. “She also had the opportunity to do some humorous stuff. Some emotional stuff. She really pulled it all together. I’m lucky to have her in my life and career.
Specifically speaking FrankensteinGunn noted that he leaned toward the original story of Mary Shelley’s character. “Of course, it’s definitely its own take. But you do have this ‘Frankenstein and the Bride’ story that has a little bit of a traditional feel to it,” Harbor told the audience. “It’s a familiar theme, but it’s a very original piece of work and some beautiful storytelling. I just love the character and I think people will be very surprised by it.
Grillo also joked that there will be more adult depictions of romantic relationships: “Maria and I, we had a very sexy, X-rated scene that I watched with my 16-year-old son – It was quite painful. Gunn added, “I have video of Frank and Maria in the booth trying to coax them into the scene, and they were moaning, and they were making out, and they were like making out with their hands.”
Tudyk added, “It’s an adult show and it has all the adult stuff in it. One of them is sex.” Talking about their overall progress with content, Gunn noted, “I remember one thing on the show that I Thinking it was too much. I flinched, but not much.
“Maybe one thing this series has in common with Harry and to some extent Kite Man is that even though these are obviously comedies, we take them dramatically seriously. When there’s a death or something like that, we take that very seriously. It’s a relationship, but we want people to feel it,” Lore said. “So it’s a bit of a crossover because it gives us the opportunity to do it more fully than just pure comedy.”
When asked about their approach to these animated characters and potentially seeing them in live-action, Gunn confirmed plans to see some characters in both media.
“Not only do we want Rick Flagg to show up, supermanhe is a main character peacemaker Season two,” he said. “We wanted to cast people who could live-actionly play these characters — at least for the main characters.”
Gunn further discussed how these characters might appear in the DCU during the subsequent panel, noting, “We have ideas for other things, some of which may appear in other media soon as other characters.” But he insisted that fans don’t need to know all of DC’s stories to watch, even if some already established things are mentioned. “This is about the story first. We don’t want anyone to come biocommando Said, “Oh, you have to see suicide squad understand what happened biocommando. We want people to come in blind and be really excited about it,” he added.
As for how the series will launch, Gunn joked they stole the format lost. “The first episode is you see the team come together, but every episode after that explores the backstory of one of the characters — not necessarily origins, in some places, origins — but just us seeing their past. about how they got to where they are today,” he said. “So we get to know these characters much more intimately. I think it’s a really interesting way to get to know each other. You’ll find that some of them are much better than we thought they were at the beginning of the series, and some of them are even worse.
At one point, Gunn noted to those who had already connected the series to his other anachronistic stories, “It’s kind of like Guardians of the Galaxy Sentimentality is stripped away. The characters aren’t all perfect, the story isn’t perfect, and character deaths don’t always have a purpose, like Yan’s death at the end guardian 2. Sometimes it’s just a tragic situation. In many ways, this is a darker story, but hopefully just as energetic.
The DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation series was first revealed back in June 2023 during an Annecy panel featuring executives from Warner Bros. Animation, Max and Adult Swim. In an exclusive interview hollywood reporterSuzanna Makkos, executive vice president of original comedy and adult animation at Max and Adult Swim, spoke of Gunn’s all-out approach and “passionate” dedication to the material. “James brings a completely different flavor to it, which is his empathy for these ‘monster’ characters,” added Girardi, executive vice president of alternative programming at Warner Bros. Animation. “I’ve never done anything like this before.”
Gunn also provided an update on other ongoing projects at DC Studios, including peacemaker, superman, superwoman and lantern. Please review the content below one by one.
“Messenger of Peace”
Gunn revealed that he was filming the show last night and will resume filming on Monday, while providing an update on star John Cena’s acting growth and talking about the work of one of the directors on the show. “The new series is going really well. Greg Mottola is in the audience and he’s the great director of ‘Movies.’ Very bad film, he directed two of the best films peacemaker Once Upon a Time – Episodes 2 and 3 of Season 2. John Cena said, ‘Honestly, God, I’ve never seen anyone improve so much in such a short period of time. He was outstanding in his first season. He’s got it this season, he’s been great,” Gunn said.
‘Superman’
according to supermanGunn reiterated past statements about canine hero Crypto, praised stars David Coronthwaite and Rachel Brosnahan, and provided some clip and trailer-time updates.
“Krypto, this is amazing. We’ve been editing with him. For me personally, he’s been an incredible part of the story. When I was writing the script, he came in and changed everything. We Deep in the editing process. David Corenswet is going to fucking blow people away. He’s the movie star that everyone dreams of being. I don’t think anyone really understands the dramatic, comedic side of this guy. The depth of talent. He’s probably the best physical action star I’ve ever worked with…” Gunn said, before being jokingly interrupted by another panelist. “I feel good about it and I’m working really hard on things, so it’s great… We’ll see a trailer soon, but not too soon.”
Supergirl: Women of Tomorrow
Gunn talks about how the movie will be based on Tom King’s comic tomorrow’s womancalling it a “completely different, unique take on superheroes,” before revealing that he had just seen an audition for “Ruth.”
“This is another project that was shelved from the beginning. [Writer] Anna [Nogueira] Came in and she pitched me the Supergirl story and it was one of the best pitches I’ve ever heard and she wrote it immediately. Her first drafts are great and they keep getting better. Then [director] Craig [Gillespie] It’s very easy to work with and I can’t wait for it to be released,” he said. “It’s a three-act structure, so it’s a little bit different from the structure, it goes through different stories, but as all of these main characters, the main themes.”
“lantern”
Much of Gunn’s focus has been on star Aaron Pierre, who was recently announced to play John Stewart, with the DC Studios chief also revealing that he was almost cast in another superhero role.
“Aaron Pierre is someone I’ve wanted to work with for a long time. People don’t know it, but he was almost cast as Adam Warlock. He’s an incredible actor, and I’ve been fascinated by it since the beginning of his career. Just admired him so much. Seeing him and Kyle reading together was one of those magical moments where I didn’t care what they were saying, I just loved what they were saying together,” he said. “When we first started the DCU, a few weeks before we started the project, we got together with a group of writers, Tom King was one of them, and we were in this room and we came up with some of this concept for lantern. It’s a very grounded series, a very real series, which is a weird thing green lantern exhibit. But this will be unprecedented.
