MEGAN FABBRI: You’re very open about coming from a quiet area. What was it like to go from a small-town lad to one of the most famous Irishmen of modern times? What was it like to be suddenly in the public eye? Is there anything you wish you’d known sooner?
Jack Septisier: I started in 2012. I started my channel because I was lonely and wanted to find more people who loved video games as much as I did. So I found all these people online and it was hard not to be a little interested in them.
The great thing about doing these things is that I can do them all day, every day. It’s still never enough. Watching YouTube all day every day and grinding yourself into dust is not healthy. If your happiness is based on external factors like this, you will never truly be consistently happy. Working on finding inner peace is really important to me right now.
Fabbri: Why? bloodborne Your first tattoo? I have “Brave Hunter Marks” and I laughed when I learned that you do too. There are many symbols in it from softwarePlayStation exclusive. I have my reasons, what are your reasons? What does this mean to you?
Jack Septisier: Bloodborne is one of my favorite games. When I saw this symbol it really stood out to me. I thought about getting a tattoo for a long time and finally got it. I think this is a great tattoo because even though the Blood Hunters mark and the game mean a lot to me, when you see it, even if you don’t know Bloodborne, you can still see this tattoo and Think this is a cool design.
This is just my first time. I have more now.
Fabbri: Burnout. You started by uploading twice a day, 7 days a week for 5 years. So you’ve taken a step back, taken a break or two, and even talked about your inevitable retirement from YouTube. Besides taking a break, what do you do to avoid or recover from burnout?
Jack Septisier: It’s really important to do things that you enjoy and that excite you. Taking breaks is one way to maintain balance and avoid burnout, but I also enjoy doing other things. Now, outside of my channel, I have more things going on that bring me joy.
I’ve been drinking Top of The Mornin’ Coffee for a while – because I love coffee and realized it would be cool to have my own brand. However, he has grown so big. I saw it in a store when I was in New York for Comic-Con. It’s crazy.
Comic-Con was my first comic book convention. Launching ALTRVERSE last year was great, but this year we had panels and signings and I talked to the fans about the characters and they were really excited.
I want to keep creating, I did a podcast, but I want to do longer storytelling in this format and with more games. And books, and comic books.
FABBRI: For those unfamiliar with ALTRVERSE and Bad Egg Publishing: What do you hope people take away from these comics? What’s at the heart of this for you?
Jack Septisier: I’ve had these characters on my channel for the past few years. The universe begins to construct itself. It started with a short film. Then there are games. Comic books have always been cool. But Marvin and Jackie fit the tropes of comic books, so ALTRVERSE presented the opportunity to tell their story in this perfect medium.
I’m not a writer or an artist, so we worked with some great people and I’m really happy with the results. We even had cosplayers at New York Comic Con, so we must be doing something right!
FABBRI: What kind of content you Spending for pleasure? We are what we eat, and it’s great to think about that as a creative. What are you looking for in a story? Are there any characters you identify with?
Jack Septisier: I definitely want to read and play things that I connect with. As far as games go, besides Bloodborne and Shadow of the Colossus, I really enjoyed Alan Wake. I even started drinking coffee because of it. Sam Lake is a genius.
My favorite comic is Berserker. I think anyone who has read Berserker would put it at the top of their list. I’ve had this hefty Dark Horse book for a while, and when I started reading it I devoured it in one sitting. Comics really mean a lot to me right now. I have a Behelit tattoo.
FABBRI: You’ve said before that when you talked about retiring from YouTube, you wanted to write a book and create animations. What type of work are you most attracted to? What do you want to bring to the story you tell?
Jack Septisier: I said then that I wanted to do other creative things. I want to produce stuff. I want to make an animated show about a game I like. I want to make more games. We shared a preview of the new title at New York Comic Con. I’ll keep doing things like Jackie Boy and Marvin in the comics. Yes, I also wanted to write a book, like a fiction book, not everything about me.
Ultimately, I want to keep doing my own projects and my own characters.
