While sorting through the new releases of the best comics to buy for August 28th, I found myself wondering – is spooky season officially here? I mean, I know I’m ready for it, but I think the market agrees with me, with horror releases ranging from Frankenstein to Alien to the horror anthologies that are coming out now. Below you can find all of my recommendations (horror or otherwise), as well as a list of the usual ones…enjoy!
The most worth buying comics on August 28, 2024
Alien Vs. Avengers #1
writer: Jonathan Hickman
artist: Esad Ribic
Colorist: Yves Swosina
Writer: Corey Pettit
Publisher: Marvel Comics
It all leads to this: Aliens arrive on Earth! A planet where perfect organisms meet Superman. Who will fall first? Legendary collaborators Jonathan Hickman and Isaac Ribby? This four-part epic is a must-see for both Marvel and Alien fans!
Why it’s cool: Arguably the biggest Marvel event ever (2015 secret wars) reunite for a comic-book crossover that’s high-octane, desolate as hell, and full of horror. It’s as grand as it sounds in the first issue. Don’t miss it.

Savage VS. Deathstalker #1
writer: Michael Moresi and Tim Seeley
artist: Nathan Gooden
Colorist: Fabi Marks
Writer: Jim Campbell
Publisher: Shelter Comics
Cursed Barbarian vs. Warrior King! Ax versus sword duel! Owen vs. Death Hunter! When an evil wizard summons two of the most reluctant heroes ever, they’re forced to face off. But the clash of steel alone may not determine the ultimate winner.
Why it’s cool: I’ve been looking forward to this crossover ever since Vault first announced the new product death hunter The comic arrived this week and it didn’t disappoint. What a fantastic mashup of fantasy carnival. Both books are great, and now we get an oversized character photo.

Conversion #1
writer: John Arcudi
artist: Savannah Finley
Colorist: Miguel Coe
Writer: Michael Heisler
Publisher: Image comics
Science officer Orin Kutra finds himself stranded on a distant planet, starving and haunted by the ghosts of his dead crew. On the verge of death, he makes a startling discovery. Veteran writer John Alcudi (Rumble, BPRD) and illustrator Savannah Finley bring you a sci-fi/fantasy comic like no other.
Why it’s cool: This is an understated and melancholy gem of a sci-fi wreck comic, underpinned by concise but excellent writing and an impressive command of the comic’s atmosphere.

hello dark #2
Creator: Azam Rahajo, Frederic Hornung, Wes Craig, Robert Harker, Garth Ennis, Becky Cloonan, Tamra Bonvillain and Pa Brosseau
Publisher: Prosperity! studio
This groundbreaking modern horror anthology continues to feature an unparalleled cast of creative talent. Garth Ennis and Becky Cloonan are joined by Wes Craig, Robert Harker, Azzam Rahajo and Frederic Hornung. Both Rahajo and Hornung make their comic debuts in this special “All Cartoonists” issue.
Ennis and Cloonan continue their “war” in Part Two, raising tensions in a world on the brink of nuclear war…
Wes Craig puts the pigs of capitalism in their place in Slow-Mo Apocalypse, and Frederik Hornung explores them in Stargazer The unexpected horror of a blind date, and Azam Raharjo’s “Joker” provides straight-up nightmare fuel.
Why it’s cool: I was absolutely shocked at the level of disturbing that this anthology series went through in just two issues. The entire story is filled with horrific imagery and is then interrupted by a story being told by Garth Ennis and Becky Cloonan that feels so real it will give you chills. If you want to see big, good comic book horror this horror season, look no further.

Universal Monster – Frankenstein #1
Writer/Artist: Michael Walsh
Colorist: Tony Marie Griffin
Writer: Becca Kelly
Publisher: Picture Comics – Skybound
A modern horror visionary resurrects one of the most iconic monsters. Award-winning creator Michael Walsh (Silver) presents an exciting new take on the horror classic. Each issue of the limited series tells the shocking stories behind the body parts used to create unforgettable monsters from the original films. In the first issue, Dr. Henry Frankenstein begins his evil quest to create life by robbing the grave of a decorated policeman. But little does he know that the body contains a son mourning his father, and this little boy will change Frankenstein’s life forever.
Why it’s cool: I think all of these Universal Monsters comics are very good, but for me this is by far the best. It fills in a new story around the edges of a basic monster movie, and does it in a truly emotional way, with stunning art and perfect pacing. Sure, I’ve seen the original movie, but after reading the comic, I’m still curious to know what happens next.
