Iranian hackers stole sensitive information from the Trump campaign and resold it to the Biden campaign and multiple media outlets. Hackers sent unsolicited emails to Biden campaign staff over the summer, but no one responded, according to federal investigators.
The FBI, Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency issued a joint statement Wednesday explaining the plot. The emails, which were allegedly sent by hackers in late June and early July, “contained excerpts from non-public materials stolen from former President Trump’s campaign as text within the emails.” There is currently no information indicating these The recipient has replied.
Of course Trump is angry.
“Wow, that just came out! The FBI found out that Iran was spying on my campaign and feeding all the information to the Kamala Harris campaign. So she and her campaign illegally spied on me. Known as Iran, Iran , Iran Case! Will Kamala resign in political disgrace? Will the communist left pick a new candidate to replace her? he said on “Truth Social” on Wednesday.
Harris was not running for president when Iran sent the emails to the Biden campaign.
Trump’s press secretary Carolyn Leavitt said the Iranians want Harris to win because they know Trump will reinstate sanctions on them.
“Kamala and Biden must come clean about whether they used hacking materials provided to them by the Iranians to harm President Trump,” Levitt said. In X’s post. “What did they know? When did they know it?”
Harris campaign spokesperson Morgan Finkelstein said no one on the campaign knew they had received the hacked material.
“Some individuals have had their personal emails targeted by what appears to be spam or phishing,” she said in a statement to the media. “We condemn in the strongest terms any interference in U.S. elections by foreign actors, including this unscrupulous Welcome and unacceptable malicious activity.”
Last month, both Google and Microsoft released reports on the wave of phishing attacks they had seen targeting the Trump and Biden-Harris campaigns. Both teams of cybersecurity analysts blamed Iranian groups linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Microsoft detailed the attack, saying hackers sent spear-phishing attacks to campaign officials through “the compromised email account of a former senior adviser.” The email contained a link that directed traffic through a domain controlled by the organization and then to the website where the link was provided. In the days after this event, the same group tried unsuccessfully to gain access to the account of a former presidential candidate.
According to CNN, the former senior adviser is Roger Stone. At the time, Politico reported that it had received anonymous emails from an AOL account that was trading around internal communications from the Trump campaign. Provided is a 271 page research file on JD Vance. When Politico asked AOL Accounts how it obtained the documents, it gave a cryptic answer.
“I advise you not to wonder where I got them from. Any answer to this question would prejudice my interests and legally restrict you from publishing them,” it said.
The FBI and other federal agencies said they were continuing to investigate the hack.
“As November approaches, foreign actors are increasing their election influence activities. In particular, Russia, Iran, and China are seeking to exacerbate divisions in American society through measures that serve their own interests and view the election period as A fragile moment,” the agencies said in a joint statement.
