Here is the publisher’s description of the problem:
“There’s nothing quite like a mother-daughter relationship. There’s also nothing quite like finding out your monolith of a captain used to be a carefree ensign who accidentally vanished her whole crew in an experiment gone wrong. Lucky for Beckett Mariner, she gets to soak up both experiences all on the same day as her mother, Captain Freeman, regulars her with a throwback tale of how she was ‘just like you when she was young,’ and ‘mistakes help us grow, etc. Meanwhile, what sailors want to know is how Freeman could get Pulasky to escape like this?”
Before the question arrives, Comics Beat has the opportunity to chat with Sheridan via email. We asked him Star Trekabout balancing science fiction and comedy Lower deck (of course) about what he ordered from the food copy. Additionally, Beat is honored to introduce two exclusive preview pages from this question along with the interview!
Avery Kaplan: You have a personal history Star ThreeK, including Star Trek: Lower Deck? What makes the franchise special?
From Tim Lion: I’m a lifelong hiker! I grew up in the woods on Rhode Island in the 1980s. We have three TV stations on the VHF dial, one or two of us occasionally get a good reception on the UHF dial (this is really the way people live… look up and feel scared). So you have a lot fewer choices than we have today, you just looked at everything and hopefully this is good.
Thank goodness Star Trek During this time, it was released in cinemas because it means that the channel we got at least will show a replay of the original series…I was fascinated from the beginning. Then Star Trek: The Next Generation It happened, it was a whole new level. I started reading all DC’s monthly comics and then went to my first conference at 11, not thinking I was actually in the meeting Nichelle Nichols.
Then, a teenager trek I can do the novel. This franchise has always been an important part of my life and work, Lower deck Performance, for me, this is the most perfect love letter Star Trek May be hoped for.
If you want to know how good Lower deck Really, my husband (even though I tried his best, he was not a hiker, and he wasn’t right trek – I know! ) Liked the show and asked me to accept the task Star Trek Group Editor Heather Antos IDW is here.
Kaplan: How did you participate in IDW Lower deck comics?
From the Lion: I’m a big fan of IDW trek The comics and I have some friends who contributed to that canon. They are all in a consistent experience like Bolger, especially with Heather and his team, who are all in a consistent experience like Bolger.
So when I met Heather in a meeting, we both showed up and she asked me about my favorite times Star Trek Just like (like choosing a favorite kid, but fine), I just told her I think Lower deck It is the most trek ever in subversiveness. I looked at her documents, the information behind Cheshire Cats laughing until last year she pulled my desk from San Diego Comic Con and she asked me if I was interested in writing something Lower deck.
You have to ask her, but I think she not only considered mine trek Fanatic, but I’ve worked in animation and comics for many years and thought I might be stupid to follow the amazing Ruian North. When I was primarily hired to write something intense drama like animation Batman: Long-term Halloween Movies and Alan Scott: Green Lantern Comics, Heather caught me and my stupidity, and I’m very grateful for it. (By the way, my friends are right – from day one, it has been a pleasure to work with this editorial team.
Kaplan: Lower deck It’s serious Star Trekbut it’s also very interesting. How do you balance comedy with science fiction?
From the Lion: I’m not. This means I’m still trying to find this balance. I once asked the animation is great Lauren Faust If there is anything I can write better, and (thanks to good honesty), she says I tend to joke at the expense of the soul. No one has made me so fast!
So when I really want to put down an irresistible gag, it’s hard, but it may have to resist because we have to go back to the plot, or because it can be fun, it’s too “comic”. about Lower deck It’s on Paramount+ that I can see whenever I get lost. Mike McMahon His team always finds the perfect balance of jokes and bets, so I will continue to look for them and their work and hope some of them will disappear.
Kaplan: What kind of research has been conducted Lower deck #7? Do you have any legacy episodes you consulted about this question?
From the Lion: so much. First, this story is a direct response to the scene in Episode 4 Lower deckso I certainly did it by re-watching. Then we learned that we told a flashback story 15 years ago Lower deckput us between season 2 and season 3 of season 2 The next generationI think it’s important to go back and re-watch some of these season 2 episodes.
thing Lower deck Show performed very well, and it was to get important characters and actors from the entire franchise involved, and I really wanted to keep this tradition alive, so it made sense to bring characters from that era. Now let me clearly say that I feel that Dr. Pulasky has been underrated all the time and that while re-watching, I was reminded of me Diana Muldaur In role. I’m a big Murdot, back to her appearance Star Trek: Original SeriesDon’t let me start L long.
We didn’t really know Pulasky for a short time on TV, so I felt that gave us some permission to have fun with her – so she definitely went to some weird places in this story. Finally, we put her feet back on the ground and I hope we have given you some new reasons to love her.
Ultimately, though, it’s a story about Carol Freeman, and that’s another story! I have a lot of questions about Carol’s history that must be answered before digging into writing. Her age and rankings and Beckett’s age and grade, as well as her Illinois 15 years ago, I asked the question that almost made my head explode. Thank you, Mike and Paramount for helping us browse these waters. So in 7 and 8th, you will not only see some new aspects of Pulasky, but also to Freeman.
Kaplan: If we have any misleading readers Lower deck But can you give us an idea of why this is the question of what should be brought to local comic shops?
From the Lion: You certainly don’t need to read Chapters 1-6 to get into #7 – but the TV show is packed, what are you waiting for? More Lower deck bona fide! But, good – for argument, let’s say you did read questions 1-6, but your memories have been removed by Paxans to keep their world hidden – so it feels like you’re starting with issue 7.
In that case, I will tell you, TNG Nerd, I know you are, you will like it Illinois Ensign Freeman and her lower deck lieutenant wore their old star jumpsuits, as they competed against the newly surfaced Romulan Star Empire…aka “The Beautiful Past.” If you are like me and think Freeman is great, but how different Mariner is from her mom, it’s a little weird because it’s not always the case.
Kaplan: If you could order anything from a food copy, what would you get?
From the Lion: Anything my mom has done before. Literally. She is not a fancy chef, but, man, whatever she cooks is like love and my home, if there is anything that can replicate the feeling, you better believe that this is everything I ordered.
Star Trek: Lower Deck #7 It will arrive at your LCS on May 14, 2025. The focus is Monday, April 7, 2025.
