“We are all connected […] society creates barriers [and] This “disconnect” creates a fear of those who are different. Tonight’s episode smart mind The point is, if we take the time to understand why someone behaves the way they do, rather than being quick to label them, we might be able to find the connection.

In one case, Oliver spots a young man on the street who appears to be in crisis. We see the people around him looking at him like he’s crazy, and if they don’t look at him, they pretend he doesn’t even exist. Unlike those people, Oliver stopped and asked him what happened. The man asks if he saw them too, and Oliver agrees with him but needs more explanation. The man claimed to have seen a dragon.

Oliver took him to the hospital to stay. He enlists the help of an intern to figure out what happened to this guy – whose name we find out is Pete. While Oliver needs help with another case, the interns are trying to figure out what Pete’s dragon looks like. He took Dr. Jacob Nash and Dr. Van Markus with him to assist, leaving Dr. Ericka Kinney and Dr. Dana Dang with Pete. Later, Dr. Kinney attempts to refer Pete to Dr. Carol Pierce, who says he is dealing with psychological issues. Basically, she’s trying to pass her patients off to Dr. Pierce in order to handle Oliver’s current case. It didn’t take long; Dr. Pierce asked Pete a few questions and realized that what was happening to him was more neurological than psychological. Still, she was thankful that she called Dr. Kinney out.

Dr. Kinney and Dr. Tang work harder on the case, heading to Pete’s apartment where his roommate tells them that Pete has been sleeping a lot and missing school (I can’t be the only one who notices this, right?). They were there, thinking something in his environment might be the cause. After nearly being made to vomit, Dr. Kinney rushes to open a window where she discovers the dragon. The fact that he can still see the dragon when it’s not around is worrying. Another MRI scan showed blood had accumulated in his brain, causing the condition. He was rushed to emergency surgery (great receiving team!). It’s a good thing for Dr. Kinney that she realizes sooner or later that her bias could cost Pete his life.

In another case, we met Jessie Williams, a former basketball player turned coach who canceled surgery in the morning, saying she had a disturbing dream about her Unable to move. Chief Medical Officer (Oh – and Oliver’s mom), enlisting Oliver and Carol to help assess the situation and get Jesse into surgery.

After speaking with his supervisor, Oliver heads to his office to find Jesse waiting. Oliver asks Jesse about her dreams in order to assess the situation. She said she felt like she was disembodied (Feeling disconnected from your body or yourself, or feeling disconnected from the present moment). He tells her that “the mind doesn’t create nightmares for no reason” and that he will try to help her find out what happened.

The conversations with Oliver seemed to be working well since Jesse decided to have the surgery. Carol shows her paperwork to Oliver Jesse, and he notices that she may not be as good as people think she is. He noticed a difference in her signature, which led him to believe she might still be feeling disembodied. When they went to the hospital, they saw Jesse in a frantic state. She said she didn’t want surgery (again). Jesse believes her nightmare of not being in her own body is about to become a reality.

As the days passed, Jesse’s condition continued to deteriorate. After a spinal tap, Jesse lost the ability to control his arm—and the speed at which this happened was alarming. Dr. Jacob Nash was contacting Jessie and told her that he had played D1 football but had to give it up due to multiple concussions. He assured her that they would do everything they could to help her. He focused on her smoothie before leaving her room. Dr. Nash raised the issue with Dr. Wolfe and showed him that Jesse had high levels of vitamin B6, which could be the cause of her problem. While giving her fluids to flush her system, Jesse’s condition worsened and she stopped breathing herself (what is going on?). Jesse is now intubated. Will she come back from this?

Oliver is struggling with this issue and as he gets into trouble we are taken back to his childhood. In this moment we see young Oliver talking to his father, who is unable to make an incision on the body. His father gave him advice on how to deal with it. He used this advice to help Jesse in his subsequent endeavors; get out of yourself. Start small…

Oliver decided to slowly begin the process of extubating Jesse. He was repeating what his father once said to him; “Step out of yourself and start small… one breath at a time. I trust you enough, for both of us” and she did! Jesse was able to breathe on his own. With a lot of effort, Jesse slowly recovered enough to be able to walk on his own. She’s still on the road to recovery, but never giving up hope has helped her make so much progress.

Dr. Pierce and the Director are both ready to give up on Jesse. This is a problem society has conditioned us to accept; it is cutting ties with the other person without understanding them. Dr. Wolfe demonstrates what happens when we step outside of ourselves; the possibility of making connections.
