Avery Kaplan: kiss bet There’s such an interesting core concept. What is the origin of this story?
Ingrid Ochoa: A lot of the characters are actually inspired by a lot of my close friends and crushes. We all always make interesting bets to see if we are brave enough to do something crazy. This story came to me when I was 18 myself and I was embarrassed that I hadn’t had my first kiss. Sometimes I really want to end it all and kiss any random person so I won’t be seen as weird. I learned a lot along the way about how special a first kiss actually is, and I wanted to capture those feelings, experiences, and lessons in a story. Of course, Sara Lin is not exactly based on me, but many of her feelings are similar to my own.
Kaplan: What does it feel like to see kiss betWhat was the journey of publishing a physical book? The most unexpected part?
Ochoa: It was a dream come true to see it reach such a huge audience. My audience started out as just my little sisters, but expanded to my entire classroom and eventually the Internet. I would draw comics on paper and fold them so they resembled a physical book, and I dreamed that one day, I could publish my own comic book. So actually having my own physical graphic novel really makes me excited and proud of myself.
KAPLAN: Your work is about kiss bet Which years are you particularly proud of?
Ochoa: Growing up, I read a lot of comics and other fantasy and science fiction novels, and I was always inspired by the characters and the life lessons they learned. I would become very attached to these imaginary friends, they were so real to me. Now I get messages from people all over the world telling me what they think about mine The character makes me feel so happy and excited.
Kaplan: Which character, if any, do you most relate to?
Ochoa: I can’t deny that Sara Lin and I have a lot in common. We had a terrible relationship with math during school and a rocky relationship with boys. And we probably all have undiagnosed ADHD, haha! I really enjoyed using Sara Lin to pour a lot of my feelings about what was going on in my own life into it – which is why I started writing this story.
Kaplan: Do you have a personal creative routine, or any other type of ritual surrounding your work?
Ochoa: I like to observe the people around me. Notice the feelings I get from interactions with friends, family, or my crush. I love writing about the real feelings and problems I face. I write down all the random little thoughts or conversations I have with people in the notes app on my phone, and later, when I write my story, I look back and incorporate many of the ideas inspired by this. When I work, I have to listen to music…my favorite is Billie Eilish because her music is not very loud and I can still think and work while listening.
Kaplan: Are there any other stories that particularly inspire your work? kiss bet?
Ochoa: There are so many old comics that inspired so many little things, from the art style to the story. Some classic works of Studio Ghibli, Inuyasha, Ranma ½. Like comics cute complex, Hanakimi and cardcaptor sakura.
KAPLAN: Have you ever had a particularly memorable interaction with a fan? kiss bet Can you share it with us?
Ochoa: I’ve actually become close friends with someone who was originally a fan and now I’ve hired her as my official colorist because she’s really good at painting and somehow matches my Kiss Bet style perfectly . She surprised me in some of the places I visited and now we are friends!
But honestly, I just love meeting people who have read Kiss and Loved it because I immediately think we have a lot in common. if they like kiss betwe might become friends because I write about things I think are fun and cute! So I always like to spend time chatting with them.
