Sablik left Boom! The studio launched in June after a long tenure overseeing critically acclaimed books, including lumberjack and Something is killing the children. Rich also left IDW Publishing in June after a tumultuous year. Sablik will now serve as publisher of Ignition Press, with Rich as editor-in-chief, Gitter as president and Haun as creative director.
“Depending on your market, a lot of what we’re going to try to do is going to be invisible. If we do our job right, you’re going to be a fan,” Sabrink said during the panel discussion. “In terms of independent comics publishing, at least in the single-issue North American market, the last real innovation occurred in 1992 with the founding of Image Comics. Before that, the last real innovation in comics was in 1985 with the explosion of Dark Horse .
When asked to talk about how Ignition Press is different, he said: “In general, every independent publisher follows a variation of one of these two playbooks. A hybrid of licensing and original publishing. That’s what’s coming to us today.” It seems strange to say that because the market does not exist as it did in ’85 and ’92.
“So we’re looking at go-to-market strategies for all the different pipelines that are available now. We’re going to see how they equally take a significant approach and how the whole fits together. We’re no longer fighting for a small piece of the pie…we’re going to do A bigger cake.
Ignition Press already has profiles on Instagram, Twitter/X, and Bluesky, all of which feature its logo, which features a key representing the “o” in Ignition (pictured above).
