It sounds like Astro Bot is a certified hit, as the game has clearly performed better than any other 3D platformer in the past decade besides Mario.
Today, if you’re planning to make a 3D platformer, you’re probably facing an uphill battle. While the genre dominated 3D gaming in its early years, interest in it has waned in recent years, although it has made a comeback in the indie game scene in recent years. Only Nintendo could put out a truly successful platformer, but Mario does seem to be facing some level of competition. GamesIndustry.biz’s Christopher Dring, who has access to various sales data for consoles and games, took to Twitter earlier this week to share some tidbits about console sales, as well as how Astro Bot is doing.

According to Dring, in Europe, Astro Bot has sold 34% more than Sonic Frontier and 52% more than Crash Bandicoot 4, considering the brand recognition of these series is relatively new to the genre. ‘s Astro Bot is much higher, and both series are clearly impressive. Delin didn’t reveal specific sales figures, but when a fan responded that beating Sonic Frontiers was nothing, Delin explained that “it did more than [Sonic Frontiers’ sales] Only across Europe. But it can only work within the market in which it exists. Its true success wouldn’t be known for several years, but it was a great start for the genre.

Astro Bot’s failure to defeat Mario isn’t particularly surprising, that’s a tall mountain to climb, but it does seem like a little robot that can tell a story. PlayStation boss Hermen Hulst did say last month that Astro Bot was “very, very important” to the platform, and with a release like this, we can safely assume we’ll be seeing the little guy again at some point in the future.
