If Warner Bros. wants to inspire confidence in a Minecraft movie, its first clip that looks more like a Super Bowl ad isn’t the best choice

The first clip from the Minecraft movie is here, and like the first trailer, it makes me question their ideas for lighting.

Look, I get it, lighting movies is hard, especially when you’re trying to make the lighting feel real. Things get even more difficult when you’re mixing CGI or green screen because you need to make sure real elements (such as sets or characters) look right when mixed with unreal elements. Unfortunately for the Minecraft movie, something seems to have gone wrong, as the lighting in the first trailer was so bright and unnatural that it looked more like an expensive advertisement than an actual movie. Yesterday, the first clips from the film were shared, and I’d say it felt even worse to see the film without all the trailer music and editing.

You can check out the clip above, which aired during this year’s Minecraft Live broadcast and featured Jason Momoa, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Steve himself, Jack Black. This clip shows off the fundamentals of Minecraft, even using a crafting table, with the black color forming a sword that looks very much like no real metal, and regardless of what the sound effects are trying to tell you, Momoa’s character isn’t even trying to look like it. Make one sword, but make two barrels, that’s cool. That’s not really how it works, but I also couldn’t care less because this is a movie and movies have to make the audience laugh sometimes (even if it didn’t make me laugh).

The whole thing has the vibe of a Super Bowl commercial, you know the ones, with lights brighter than the sun and faces more famous than you’d expect from something like Teen Mints, except the movie grossed like nine figures at the box office Budget, that doesn’t bode well. Oh well! You can see it for yourself when it launches on April 4 next year.
