Rune speech, rather than “rude speech” as you might imagine, is a new mechanic. Diablo IV: Ship of Hateallowing you to add new customizable, conditional buffs to your device. These insertable items can be dropped by enemies and chests Diablo 4—Here’s how to find them and use them.
What is rune language?
Runewords are a new type of stone that you can put into your gear to gain abilities only available to other classes. You can find them in the second tab of your inventory, labeled “Socketables,” and they come in two halves that you can mix and match to create a variety of bonus effects.
To use a Runeword, you need to have a piece of equipment with two empty slots (one slot for each half of the Runeword), a Ritual Rune, and a Summoning Rune.
How to construct rune language?
The yellow “Ritual Runes” represent the upper portion of the Rune Word, and they will specify the actions you need to take. For example, “Zan”‘s task is “Exercise the ultimate skill”. What happens when you do this? You will determine this with the other half of the Rune Word; the Invocation Rune.
Summoning runes are purple and they represent the lower half of the Rune Word. They specify the rewards you receive by performing the actions listed on the attached ritual rune. For example, “Ton” will summon the magician’s meteorite to cause damage to the enemy.
When put together, the two create the Rune Word “ZanTon”, which summons meteorites whenever you cast your ultimate ability. Another useful runeword I made is “CemTal” or “Acrobatic Locusts” which automatically casts Spiritborn’s “Plague Swarm” whenever I use dodge.
How to use Rune Language?
After placing ritual runes and summoning runes into dual-slot items, a purple icon will appear above the action bar. What you need to do to activate them will depend on the specific Runeword you create, but if it requires more than one action, the purple icon will start to fill up as you make progress toward completing the Rune Action.
Taking CemTal as an example, I used Evade once, and you can see that the purple icon is half full. The next time I use dodge, it activates, casting Plague Swarm. If you don’t see the purple icon, that means there’s a problem, so go to the jeweler and unplug the rune socket and try again.
How to get more runes?
Just like other items, you can see runes from enemies, chests, etc. There are tons of runes out there with many different effects, so experiment and find the runeword that works best for you. Good hunting!
