Blood Moons occur every 7 days (although you can modify this time frame in the game settings). When the red moon rises, a unique tribe will appear nearby and immediately make a beeline for your location.
It all starts with this wave of hordes attacking your position. Whether you’re inside a base, remaining completely silent or firing left and right, the Horde always knows exactly where you are. But after you knock down the first wave, things only get worse – subsequent waves of undead will spawn until the blood moon ends at 4am.

Reinforce your base or building before the blood moon

For your first blood moon, you may not have enough materials to build an entire fortress from scratch. Therefore, we recommend strengthening the existing structure. There are plenty of things in the world that should suit your purposes, but if possible, find a two-story building you can go up and destroy the stairs.
This tactic won’t stop the zombies completely, but it will slow them down, allowing you to get a few shots in with your trusty rifle or pistol!
Complete the businessman’s mission

Unless you spend your first week carefully looting every point of interest and house you stumble across, you most likely won’t have the resources you need to survive among the Blood Moon tribes. But the game introduces you to a trader very early on. Use this merchant to stock up on essentials, including weapons, ammunition, building materials, and aid items like food, water, and health kits.
Some of Trader Rekt’s early missions reward you with a makeshift rifle, which can kill most zombies in one hit when given a headshot. This is good for clearing out small groups of undead as long as you can shoot without panicking.
Additionally, Rekt and other merchants will reward you with skill magazines, unlocking additional crafting plans and improving your abilities. These crafting plans allow you to build what you need to survive, and better skills and stats mean your overall lifespan will be longer.
