The sixth episode of HBO’s Chronicles of the Targaryens Season 2 begins with the Lannister army arriving at the Gold Tooth and meeting the surrendered Lord Lyford. But without Aemond joining Wagner’s battle, Jason Lannister would not be able to advance towards Harrenhal.
This led to a tense Green Council meeting. Not surprisingly, Aemond doesn’t like to be ordered around. He proposes a deal with the Three Kingdoms, challenges the Black Team’s navy, and opens a passage to end the blockade of King’s Landing. When Kriston Cole warned Aemond of the dangers, he was sent to prepare for the Battle of Harrenhal. Alison was ignored at the meeting, not to mention almost married into the Greyjoy family. She was subsequently formally dismissed from her parliamentary duties.
The Black Council takes an exciting turn as Renlea puts all her energy into executing her plan to find the dragonrider hidden in the family tree. First to strike was Ser Steffon Darklyn, who had a Targaryen great-grandmother and was honored to ride the god. But we quickly learned the risks of this endeavor. “To own a dragon, you must be prepared to die.”
Somehow, Daemon is still going on his haunted adventures at Harrenhal and is haunted by dreams of Viserys. The first dream recalls Daemon calling Viserys’s dead infant son “Heir of a Day” and the severance of their relationship. Daemon was sulking like a sad puppy trapped in the throne room. The second dream is a visualization of Daemon’s guilt. He found Viserys crying over the body of his dead wife and comforting him, just like he wished he had done in reality. These scenes prove how much we miss seeing Paddy Considine on screen.
Daemon, apparently furious at Harrenhal, began attacking Lord Strong and fleeing from Alyss Rivers. But Rivers remained etched in his mind and gave him some much-needed “advice.” She told him to calm down and that in three days “the wind would change.” Things did take a turn, and Lord Grover eventually died and his young grandson took over Riverrun. Damon completely panicked and started crying.
With Ser Darklin unable to tame the sea smoke, the Dragonrider experiment fell into literal flames. The aftermath left Rhaenyra confused as to which sword to use in this war. real or metaphorical. The PR campaign, run by Mythalia, went well and the people of King’s Landing were left in such dire straits that they immediately believed the rumors of a feast at the Red Keep. On top of that, the minor characters we see throughout the show are Targaryen bastards. Ulf is disgusted with the tavern, and the blacksmith rushes to get the food that the Black Team has delivered in a boat. Still, Rhaenyra was so restless and tired of hearing Daemon’s name that she slapped Lord Bartimus for his rant.
With Eamond at the helm, Larisse Strong is losing his influence over the Greens. Aemond saw through Laris’s constant attempts to become the Hand of the King, so he asked Laris to find him a true Hand of the King: Otto Hightower. The PR queen is returning to Team Green!
Aegon is still alive, which complicates everything for Aemond. Aegon feared for his extremely fragile life and relented because he had no memory of his brother’s attempt to murder him. Ironically, Aegon’s right eye was burned out.
Rhaena discovers a dragon in the valley. It would be a shame if a Targaryen could… ride it. Lord Collis invited his (not yet formally recognized) son Arryn to serve as his first mate. Irene continued to reject Corliss and hide his identity by shaving off his gray hair.
A depressed Allison tells her brother Gwayne about her youngest son, Darren. He was sent to Oldtown for guardianship and gradually became kind-hearted. Alicent was happy that one of her children wasn’t that bad, and she was melancholy that she wasn’t the one to raise the child. She and Helena went to the Red Fort together, but their prayers were interrupted by riots in the streets. The queens come face to face with hungry and tired commoners. When the rioters declared Rhaenyra the true queen, Alicent was struck by a fish. When the public brawl turns deadly, Allison and Helana escape.
Lalys stood by his royal ally Aegon and declared that he would be permanently disabled. We learn that Larisse was born with a twisted foot and was quickly abandoned by his family. He wept as he prepared Aegon for the indignity of being disfigured.
After cooking Ser Darklyn, Seasmoke fled Dragonstone on horseback. Until he chased Adam through the woods of Driftmark. The scene switches as Adam faces the dragon. Can the bastard tame his half-brother’s dragon?
Throughout the episode, Rhaenyra has been consulting with Mythalia backstage. The two evolved from bickering queen and prisoner to queen and counselor making plans. Misalia told Rhaenyra about her past sexual abuse at the hands of her father and the resulting infertility. She swore to trust Rhaenyra and kissed her. The moment was cut short as news broke that Haiyan had been spotted with a rider. Rhaenyra did not go to the Dragon Riding Council to find the mysterious rider.
This episode raises many questions such as; will the Black Team accept non-noble dragon knights? Does Kiss of Mysaria show that a certain green-and-black fan ship has become canon? Who’s been feeding that stray dog during lockdown in King’s Landing?
