Aside from a basic front door, one of the best ways to protect your base or stop the mob from getting anywhere is with a fence. Fences in Minecraft are very powerful because, unlike many other blocks, you can’t jump over them while standing on the ground. To learn how to make a fence and how to best use it, read the guide below.
Making a fence in Minecraft
The Fence is a very simple item once you know the recipe, as it only requires two basic resources to craft. You can see the recipe for a basic fence below:
- On the workbench, place the two sticks into the middle and bottom boxes
- Then, place four identical boards into the four boxes bordered by the sticks

No other items are easier to obtain than sticks and planks. You can collect planks by chopping logs and placing them in a box on the crafting table. You can then use these planks to craft sticks by placing two of the planks on a workbench. You now have all the resources you need to fence.
However, it’s important to remember that you need planks of the same wood type for the fence recipe to work. If you try to use three oak boards and one spruce board in a recipe, nothing will happen. This is because all fences specify the type of wood they are made of. The wood type will change the color of each fence, but other than that there are no major differences.
When you have your fences ready, just place one of them on a block and start connecting more fences. As long as you place the fence on the boundary block, the fence will automatically connect. When you build a fence, you may need to leave space on a block for the fence gate. This is a single item that can be crafted using four sticks and two identical pieces of wood. The recipe is the same as for a fence, but the positions of the sticks and planks are reversed. Fence gates allow you to pass through fences, just like gates allow you to pass through base walls.
