yesterday Saw a surprising demo drop for persona The latest game from developer Atlus, Metaphor: ReFantazio. The sprawling fantasy RPG launches on October 11, but the roughly six-hour game is already playable on consoles and PC. But it turns out that the PC version doesn’t perform that well.
The unusually large 43 GB demo is struggling with performance issues, with players reporting stuttering and some claiming the game only runs on one CPU core. This means that a game that doesn’t quite push the boundaries of graphics is seeing disturbing framerate jumps despite running smoothly on PS5 and Xbox Series.
This is consistent with my own initial experience. My computer is a few years old but still a nice AMD Ryzen 5 5600X with 32 MB RAM and a GeForce RTX 3070. During the first busy battle, it jumped all over the place, rarely going below 40, but changing so frequently that it was very distracting. (I’m not a framerate geek and would happily play at a solid 40 FPS, but the problem is the jitter between framerates.)
The demo also lacks a large number of standard PC graphics settings and doesn’t even have an anti-aliasing option, suggesting that a port to the console version is questionable, at least for the demo. This is something that PC gamers often see, missing important settings required to play the game properly on Breathing Tower. It’s also cause for concern for those hoping to play the full game on their computers in three weeks. We’ve reached out to Sega and Atlus to ask about this.

However, some people have come up with some solutions. Reading through the Steam reviews of the demo (currently, people are outraged at how poorly it runs, as well as people telling them they’re wrong), the most common solution seems to be to reduce the game’s render size. This sounds like a bummer fix until you learn that games often start out preset at 125% to 150%. My own startup speed is 125%.
Yes, it works. I lowered it to 100% (what? I’m honestly not sure – I feel like more than 100% should make the game hang on the sides of my monitor, but the options go from 50% to 200), and then I’m packed in dozens Achieved a stable 60FPS on busy streets with NPCs.
In fact, after changing this setting, I was able to increase the texture quality to “High” and see no performance impact at all. This all runs at 2560×1440 resolution in the viewport.

While the game is running, open Task Manager (Ctrl Shift Esc is a neat shortcut!), select the Details tab, then right-click METAPHOR.exe and select Set Association. I also tried that, yes, then I increased the render scale to 150% and my fps hovered between 55 and 60.
Hopefully, when the game launches on October 11, the PC version will feature a better set of options, including standards like anti-aliasing, DLSS, and address any core usage bugs. In the meantime, these fixes have worked for me and others.
