Terracotta Warriors are one of the most famous building blocks in all of Minecraft. It can be dyed any color you want and is fairly simple to obtain if you know where to look. Below, you can learn more about how to get Terracotta Warriors in Minecraft and some of their uses.
Finding Terracotta Warriors in Minecraft
Unlike other blocks in the game, Terracotta Warriors cannot be crafted using a furnace or crafting table. Instead, you need to mine blocks in specific biomes in Minecraft. Specifically, you need to head to the Badlands biome, also known as the Mesa biome. These biomes look like a giant canyon, filled with brown and orange blocks and huge rock-like structures as far as the eye can see. The only plants you’ll find here are dead shrubs and cacti, but you’ll also find healthy terra cotta.
Technically there are three different versions of the Wasteland biome, but you can find Terracotta Warriors in all three. Like any biome in Minecraft, the location of wastelands in your world is randomized. However, wasteland biomes often border deserts and mountains, but rarely appear near any water source. If you’re playing in a creative world, you can use console commands to teleport directly to biomes. You can enter: “/find biome wastelands”, the game will generate the coordinates of the nearest wasteland biome. Then, using the teleport command with the coordinates, you will be in the exact center of the biome.

When you get to the Badlands biome, you need to look past all the red sand that is prevalent on the surface. Terracotta may also appear on the surface, but you’ll usually find it clumped together or underneath a layer or two of red sand. Terracotta can come in several different colors in biomes, including brown that looks very similar to sand. In most cases, terra cotta is darker and smoother than sand, so pay attention to its texture.
Once you find some Terracotta Warriors, you can only add them to your inventory by mining them with a pickaxe. Terracotta blocks will not be produced using any other tool. Any pickaxe will do the job, so if you happen to spawn near a wasteland biome, you can have Terracotta Warriors at the start of your Minecraft journey.
How to dye terracotta warriors different colors
If you want your terracotta to be a specific color for your base, you can easily dye your terracotta. This requires the following crafting recipe:
- Place the eight clay blocks around the middle box on the crafting table
- Place any color dye in the center of the workbench

In this particular example, I used green dye, which we covered in a previous guide on how to make, but any color dye will work. Now you can use a variety of different colored terracotta blocks in Minecraft to make unique structures, or you can just use the original colors.
