The closed beta for Specter Divide, a competitive 3v3 multiplayer shooter with unique gameplay, is now live, and if you want to join in, developer Mountaintop Studios has listed two ways to get a key. The closed beta will be available exclusively on PC via Steam until August 21, and the studio says you’ll automatically gain access if you participated in any previous playtests.
The first way to gain access to the closed beta is to receive a Specter Divide drop-in key via an eligible Twitch stream. Once you receive the key, you will need to link your Specter Divide and Twitch accounts. This route will also unlock three unique in-game items, including the Spray of Malice, the Troublemaker Banner, and the Sinister Smile Charm.
For the second method, you can request a closed beta access key through the Specter Divide Steam page, but it’s worth noting that Mountaintop will prioritize Twitch drops compared to this method. You can try both methods to increase your chances, and if you’re unlucky, Mountaintop plans to host more playtests in the future.
In case you missed it, Specter Divide uses a novel “one mind, two bodies” binary gameplay system combined with tactical gunplay. This feature allows players to freely switch to their alter egos (the titular ghosts) to outwit other players. Ideally, you can place ghosts in specific locations to cover certain angles or reinforce teammates, giving you that important secondary Seize the opportunity to win.
Specter Divide’s visual style is inspired by sci-fi comic book art and classic Japanese cel animation from the ’90s, giving it a hand-drawn look and feel, and Mountaintop has hired Twitch star Michael “Shroud” Grzesiek as lead game consultant. Mountaintop describes the game as a love letter to games like Counter-Strike, and the independent studio plans to self-publish Specter Divide.
