Here are 10 strategies for more inclusive events:
- Download the Diversity and Inclusion Dictionary of Tourism Diversity to be familiar with DEI and accessibility topics related to events.
- Many DMOs have a list of a few businesses on their websites. Destination DC lists black-owned restaurants, while Meet Boston has a listing called Black Alled Boston. The Los Angeles Tourism industry has a comprehensive supplier diversity program, namely business connectivity. Visit Cicin lists its local suppliers owned by ethnic minorities, veterans, women and LGBTQ.
- Make sure your planning team is diverse. Create a consulting team to inform you of your decision and make suggestions.
- Be sure to avoid dates consistent with key religious holidays.
- Your registration and survey should emphasize the importance of inclusion in your activities and avoid raising questions that lead to collection of irrelevant analysis.
- A spokesperson for books from different nationalities, genders, religious beliefs and cultural backgrounds. Resources include Black speaker network speaker catalogs and a diverse speaker bureau. When you join executives and sponsors on stage, be sure to reflect the makeup of attendees.
- Focus on selecting host cities based on their inclusive social climate. If this is impossible, consider using social bias as a socially conscious alternative. Select your cause and charity, create an event, and then share donations with attendees.
- Expand organization’s DEI support and messaging. This is more important than ever, because Dei is under attack and becomes more political throughout the United States
- Perform an overall assessment of all aspects of the event, including the images you include in your marketing and website, to ensure they represent all attendees.
- Celebrate each other. Recognizing and celebrating each other’s differences is an effective way to cultivate support from various communities. Support different celebrations held throughout the year to recognize the contributions of these communities.
