The sequel to “Beetlejuice” is about to be released, and director Tim Burton shares his feelings about the first part and his preparations for the second one.
Beetlejuice isn’t exactly a cult classic, as it did pretty well at the box office compared to the budget it was released on, but it’s definitely a film that has some cult following. Apparently, there are enough fans to get a sequel off the ground, but speaking at the Venice Film Festival (via Deadline ), director Tim Burton didn’t seem to quite understand why it was so successful and developed so many fans. “As much as I loved it, I never understood why it was successful,” Burton said of the original film.

“For me, I would never take this movie as personal. So after being able to work with Michael for so many years [Keaton]Winona [Ryder] and catherine [O’Hara] Make it more personal and special again with Jenna [Ortega]Monica [Belluci]justin [Theroux] and william [Dafoe] – New people who get into the spirit of it. So this is a very personal project for me.
When going back to a sequel to a 36-year-old movie, you might think the starting point would be to rewatch the original, but it turns out Burton didn’t do that because he didn’t set up the project as a “sequel that would require a lot of money,” ” He continued, “This is just a very personal movie.
Burton also talked about the Netflix Wednesday series, which is produced in part through his production company, and how the show wasn’t necessarily the reason he decided to return to Beetlejuice, but it did give him some new energy.
“Over the past few years, I’ve become disillusioned with the film industry,” Burton said. “So I knew if I was going to do something that my heart wanted to do. I had kind of lost myself, so this movie was a rejuvenation. Getting back to something I love and working with people I love. This time, it turned out It doesn’t matter how, I just love making with these guys.
