“Blue Lock” has captured the attention of sports anime fans and breathed new life into football, the world’s most popular sport. Action and persistence are just two reasons to watch the Blue Lock -Episode Nagi- movie, but its soundtrack stands out as a favorite. What better way to discuss the music in this film than directly with the people responsible for this type of music?
Today, we sit down with ASH DA HERO to discuss their role in the making of the Blue Lock -Episode Nagi-OST and get a glimpse into the band’s future. Keep rocking!
ASH DA HERO EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us! In addition to your involvement in the film, your unique fusion of rock, punk and hip-hop has attracted worldwide attention. Can you share how you developed this unique style?
From the moment we first made music together, it was almost a miracle that our different roots came together so perfectly to create fun songs. For example, blending rock and roll with hip-hop and adding punk essence here and there. All five of us have different musical roots, as well as different hometowns, lifestyles and cultural influences. These different backgrounds probably inevitably lead to our unique style.
Your songs “Beast Mode” and “Octave” were written for Blue Lock -Episode Nagi-. How do you come to create songs specifically for anime?
We try to find intersections between the story of the anime and the story of our band. They always intersect. We also make sure to express our own style clearly.
Speaking of these songs on your latest release, can you delve deeper into the themes behind them and how they tie into the narrative of Blue Lock -Episode Nagi-?
We love the animation and that love spills over into the lyrics. Because we are fans ourselves, we also have a sense of responsibility. That was tough.
The dancing rhythm of “Beast Mode” represents a person’s heart rate when they wake up. The call and response in the chorus represents “self-questioning.”
“Octave” depicts the emotional interaction between Nagi and Reo through the lyrics, and the main melody and harmony express the misunderstanding between them.
Blue Lock is one of our favorite anime too! But… how familiar are you with the sport of football and anime? What are your hobbies outside of music?
I’m a huge Blue Lock fan; I own every volume of the comic! I’m a huge soccer fan, so I check MLS regularly. The LA Galaxy even have a Japanese player.
Yes! Special thanks to Maya Yoshida!
Going back to your music, your performances are known for their intensity and energy. What brings such enthusiasm to the stage?
We are inspired by many artists including Bob Marley, Eminem, Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington, Rage Against the Machine’s Zack de la Rocha, Incubus’ Brandon Boyd and Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong.
Can you tell us about your experience performing at overseas events such as Anime Matsuri 2023 and OH! MY ROCK Macau Music Festival? How are international audiences different from Japanese fans?
I have always admired international artists. In particular, Alanis Morissette’s shot at Woodstock ’99 remains timeless to me. Overseas fans seem to have a very free-spirited atmosphere, singing, dancing, and enjoying live performances in their own way. The concert we had in Houston was amazing. In contrast, Japanese audiences may be more conservative.
ASH DA HERO has quickly gained popularity since its inception in 2021.
We are busy writing a lot of songs, so stay tuned for their release!
Now for the last question, considering that a lot of people may be discovering your music through this interview, what message do you hope listeners take away from your songs?
We want everyone, regardless of language, culture or country, to be united through our music.
If you haven’t seen Blue Lock -Episode Nagi- yet, we highly recommend you watch it as soon as possible because you will absolutely love every second of it!
