Henry Cavill’s days as Man of Steel and Geralt of Rivia may be behind him, but his next project is already ready. Cavill has signed on to star in Amazon-MGM Studios’ upcoming live-action “Voltron.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter , Cavill is only the second member of the Voltron cast to be announced. Relatively unknown Daniel Quinn-Toye was also cast in the title role after winning acclaim as Tom Holland’s understudy in London’s West End production of Romeo and Juliet.
Details about Cavill’s character have yet to be revealed, but if the film stays true to the source material, he’ll likely play Keith Kogane, one of five space explorers sent by the Galactic Federation to the planet Arus leader. Upon arrival, the team discovered the lost robotic lions and united them to form Voltron to fight against King Zarkon and his Druill Empire. Voltron is the only force in the universe that can stand up to Zarkon’s monster robes and his plan to conquer Arus.
The first season of the original 1984 Voltron series was a dubbed and edited version of the 1981 animated series Beastmaster GoLion, while the second season, which introduced the vehicle Voltron, was taken from the unrelated series Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV. Due to Voltron’s popularity in the United States, new episodes were created with Lion Force Voltron, and there was eventually a special co-produced with both versions of Voltron.
In 2016, DreamWorks Animation produced a reboot animated series “Voltron: Legendary Defender”, which aired 78 episodes on Netflix. It’s unclear if the new feature-length film will contain anything from that version of the series.
Rawson Marshall Thurber will direct Voltron from a script he co-wrote with Alan Shanman. The film does not yet have a release date.
