Hayao Miyazakico-founder and director Studio Ghiblireceived the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award on November 16 in Manila, Philippines. The director did not attend the awards ceremony due to health reasons. Studio Ghibli board member Kenichi Yuda Accepting the award on behalf of Hayao Miyazaki.
In his acceptance speech read by Yoda, Miyazaki talked about what the Japanese military did during World War II: “The Japanese did a lot of terrible things. They killed a lot of civilians. The Japanese people must never forget that. It will remain forever. With this history, I solemnly accept the Ramon Magsaysay Award from the Philippines.

Organizers of the award announced Miyazaki as the 2024 winner during a live broadcast on August 31. Youtube channel. The Ramon Magsay Prize Foundation website released Miyazaki’s statement on September 5:
I am delighted to receive the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award. It would be a great honor if my film could be embraced by many Asians and give them the strength to survive, especially the children born there. I heard this award used to be given to respected film directors Akira Kurosawa and poet Michiko Ishimura. I am deeply honored and humbled to join the ranks of those who have received this honor.
The Ramon Magsaysay Award was established in 1957 “to honor the memory of President Magsaysay of the Philippines and to perpetuate his example of integrity in public service and pragmatic idealism in a democratic society.” The award is often referred to as the “Asian Nobel Prize”.
